Included cabin bags help, but poor punctuality limits JetBlue's value

Axel considers JetBlue a reasonable value for travelers who pack light and choose Main when plans may change. Included cabin bags, Main changes and cancellations without fees, and nonexpiring TrueBlue points are useful strengths. Poor recent punctuality, a high complaint rate and costly Main Base flexibility make the cheapest ticket a weaker choice for trips with little room for disruption.

  • Best
  • Every fare includes an overhead carry-on, space permitting, and a personal item.
  • Main has no change or cancellation fee before departure.
  • TrueBlue points do not expire.
  • Worst
  • Only 68.0% of arrivals were on time in DOT's April, May, July and August 2026 figures.
  • Main Base changes or cancellations cost $150 per person.
  • The complaint rate was 16.28 per 100,000 passengers, versus a U.S. airline median of 5.60.

If the fare drops after you book, can you get money back?

PartlyRepriceability 6.8/10

Partly. JetBlue's published method is to cancel and rebook. Main has no change or cancellation fee, with any savings retained as credit. Main Base charges $150 per person per change or cancellation. The July 29, 2026 contract permits up to $200. Main Flex permits an original-payment refund before departure. Credits generally expire 12 months from original ticketing, not credit issuance, and can book anyone, but cannot move between accounts. Direct flight bookings made at least seven days ahead qualify for full refunds if the entire reservation is cancelled within 24 hours. JetBlue Vacations is excluded, and the old fare cannot be restored if rebooking prices rise.

Among 168 bookings checked September 10 to October 26, 2026, Axel observed 41 drops of at least 5%, with median drops of 15.1% and $105. In the same period, 1 of Axel's 6 attempts to recover a lower fare succeeded, a small sample. Repricing is Axel's price-drop protection: after booking, Axel watches fares and works to deliver further savings when prices fall. Repricing is included with Axel Membership.

Fare difference on a cheaper change
As a credit. JetBlue's Refunds FAQ says a lower fare after a flight change automatically produces JetBlue travel credit, not an original-payment refund. Main has no change fee; Base fees apply before the credit is issued. This does not establish an entitlement to reprice the identical flight in place.
Same flight, lower price
JetBlue's published procedure is to cancel and rebook online at the current price. Main cancellation is fee-free, leaving unused value as credit; Base cancellation costs $150 per person. Flex permits an original-payment refund before departure. JetBlue cannot restore the previous fare if the price rises during rebooking. Its Best Fare Guarantee refers to eligible 24-hour cancellation. This describes the documented procedure, not a verified prohibition on every agent-assisted adjustment.
Credits (JetBlue travel credit, held in a JetBlue travel credit account, formerly commonly called Travel Bank)
Resolved: null is correct for this field, which measures validity from credit issuance. JetBlue's Our Fares and Refunds pages say ordinary change/cancellation credits expire 12 months from original ticketing, not 12 months after the credit is issued, so remaining validity varies. Neither webpage displays an update date; both were checked October 26, 2026. Contract of Carriage Revision 103, dated July 29, 2026, confirms one year from the original ticket's booking date. The travel-credit page also says individual expiration dates may differ. Apply credit by 11:59 p.m. Central Time on its expiration date; travel may occur later. Rebooking and cancelling does not extend expiration, and expired credit is not redeposited. Transferable: yes.
24-hour rule
For direct flight bookings made at least seven days before departure, cancel the entire reservation within 24 hours of purchase for a full original-payment refund without a cancellation penalty, including Base fares. JetBlue Vacations reservations are excluded. This is cancellation after payment, not an unpaid hold.
Same-day change
Main and other standard fares have a $100-per-person same-day switch/standby fee without a fare difference; Flex fares include these benefits. Base same-day switches cost $100. Eligible non-Base Mosaic customers receive a waiver; Main Base Mosaic customers still pay $100. Changes normally open at midnight in the departure airport's time zone, or 24 hours before departure for Mosaic members. Keep the same travel date and origin/destination cities; co-located airports may be substituted. Travel-agent guidance requires the same cabin, although the Mint FAQ separately permits Mint-to-Main switches.
Schedule changes
Cancellation, departure at least three hours earlier domestically or six hours earlier internationally, or arrival at least three/six hours later qualifies for an original-payment refund if the traveler declines the changed trip. Different origin/destination airports, added connections, involuntary downgrades and specified disability-related changes also qualify. JetBlue additionally covers broken minimum connections and offers alternate travel within five days without additional cost. Its page asks travelers seeking refunds to act before departure. DOT's cancellation refund right does not depend on whether an alternative exists within 24 hours, despite that qualification in one JetBlue disruption bullet. Required refunds are automatic when qualifying alternatives are not accepted, within seven business days for credit-card payments or 20 calendar days otherwise.

What Axel's own data shows

  • Of 168 JetBlue bookings Axel watched after purchase (September 10 to October 26, 2026), the same fare later dropped by at least 5% and $25 on 24%, by a median of 15% ($105).
  • Axel asked JetBlue to return a lower fare 6 times between September 10 and October 26, 2026: 1 got the difference back, 4 were refused under the airline's rules and in 1 the lower fare was gone by the time Axel asked.
  • The fare rules on 113 JetBlue tickets Axel issued allowed changes on 98% of them, and where the rules said what happens to the difference on a cheaper new fare, it was kept as a credit on 111 of 113.

Refunds and disruptions

U.S. DOT rules require original-payment refunds for cancellations or significant changes when you decline alternatives, within seven business days for card payments or 20 calendar days otherwise. EU261 and UK261 cover departures from those jurisdictions, while Canada APPR applies on covered Canada routes. JetBlue makes 12 of 16 DOT dashboard commitments, including a $12 meal voucher for eligible controllable arrival delays of at least three hours and hotel help for eligible overnight disruptions, subject to availability. No routine withholding of legally owed refunds was established in the last two years, although refund complaints are high. The Canadian Transportation Agency imposed C$80,000 on September 23, 2026 for failures to provide required alternate travel. U.S. DOT imposed $2 million in December 2024 for chronically delayed flights.

Regulator actions since October 2021

  • September 2026, Canadian Transportation Agency: CTA imposed a C$80,000 administrative penalty for 40 violations involving failure to provide required, free alternate travel arrangements after controllable cancellations around April 30, 2025. The USD equivalent uses the Bank of Canada's September 23, 2026 rate of US$0.7094 per Canadian dollar; CTA stated that JetBlue could request review by October 22, 2026. Source
  • December 2024, U.S. DOT: Order 2024-12-21: Held out chronically delayed flights; $2 million. Source

Reliability

Reliability is JetBlue's clearest weakness. U.S. DOT reported 68.0% on-time arrivals and 4.35% cancellations across April, May, July and August 2026. The earlier Cirium On-Time Performance Review 2025 reported 74.66% on-time arrivals and a 1.43% cancellation rate for calendar year 2025. Cirium counts an arrival within 15 minutes of schedule as on time. These cover different periods and should not be treated as identical samples.

Fees

Main Base includes an overhead carry-on, space permitting, and a personal item. Seat choice costs extra, but automatic assignment is free. On ordinary U.S., Latin America, Caribbean and Canada routes, the first checked bag is $45 off peak or $49 peak each way when bought more than 24 hours before departure. Transatlantic Main Base charges $75 or $85 in advance. Free family seating includes Main Base, subject to booking, available seats and assignment conditions. Published age wording differs on whether age 13 is included. The headline fare excludes optional checked bags and seat choice. No fee-display findings were recorded in five years, but whether mandatory charges follow the first displayed price was not confirmed.

Complaints

JetBlue's complaint rate was 16.28 per 100,000 passengers, against a U.S. airline median of 5.60. Refund complaints were 4.06 per 100,000. DOT used April, May, July and August 2026 cases with April to June 2026 passenger counts. For the complaint months, DOT reported 0.34 mishandled bags per 100 bags and 1.42% mishandled wheelchairs and scooters. Bumping was 0.07 per 10,000 passengers in April to June 2026.

Loyalty program

TrueBlue points do not expire, and no devaluations were recorded in the last 24 months. Award pricing is fully dynamic, so a nonexpiring balance does not lock in an award price. Travel credits expire separately, and Mosaic qualification and benefit validity follow separate periods.

Choose JetBlue if

  • You travel with cabin bags and can accept a free assigned seat.
  • Choose Main when you may need to change or cancel.
  • You value TrueBlue points that do not expire.

Book elsewhere if

  • You need dependable arrival times for a tight schedule.
  • You expect cash back from voluntarily cancelling a Main ticket.
  • You may need to change a cheap Main Base ticket.

Tips

  • Skip paid seat selection on Main Base and take a free automatic assignment.
  • Add checked bags more than 24 hours before departure to use the published advance rates.
  • Book, change or cancel online when available to avoid the $25 per-person phone or chat service fee.

Questions travelers ask

Does JetBlue charge change fees?

Main has no change fee, but any fare increase still applies. Main Base charges $150 per person per change, plus any applicable fare increase. The July 29, 2026 contract allows a fee up to $200, despite current fare pages specifying $150. Main's same-day switch or standby costs $100 per person without a fare difference, while Main Flex includes those benefits. Previously purchased tickets keep their original terms.

Can I get money back if my JetBlue fare drops?

You can try through cancellation and rebooking, but there is no guaranteed cash adjustment. Main leaves the savings as travel credit, while Main Base's $150 cancellation fee reduces any benefit. Main Flex permits an original-payment refund before departure. Eligible direct bookings can also be cancelled for a full refund within 24 hours. JetBlue warns that it cannot restore the old fare if the price rises while you rebook.

How long do JetBlue travel credits last?

Generally, 12 months from the original ticket's booking date, not from cancellation or credit issuance. Individual expiry dates can differ. Apply the credit by 11:59 p.m. Central Time on its expiration date, although travel can happen later. Rebooking and cancelling does not extend validity. The owner can book travel for anyone but cannot transfer the balance to another person's account. Credits cover airfare and taxes, not separately purchased bags or seats. Expired credit is not redeposited.

What do I get if JetBlue cancels my flight?

If JetBlue cancels, you can reject alternatives and receive an original-payment refund. DOT deadlines are seven business days for credit-card payments and 20 calendar days otherwise. Qualifying significant changes also trigger refund rights, including arrival delays of at least three hours domestically or six hours internationally. Meals and overnight hotel help apply to eligible controllable disruptions, not every delay. A cancellation refund does not depend on whether JetBlue offers another flight within 24 hours.

How much do carry-on and checked bags cost on JetBlue?

All fares include an overhead carry-on, subject to space, and a personal item. On ordinary U.S., Latin America, Caribbean and Canada routes, Main Base's first checked bag costs $45 off peak or $49 peak each way when bought more than 24 hours before departure. The second costs $59 or $69. Transatlantic Main Base charges $75 or $85 for the first bag and $109 or $119 for the second in advance. Route, status and cardholder exceptions apply.

Repriceability: 6.8/10

  • Standard fare change fee: 10.0/10 (Main: no change fee)
  • Lowest fare flexibility: 4.0/10 (Main Base: $150 per person per change, plus any applicable fare increase. Current fare, fee and flight-terms pages specify $150; the contract dated July 29, 2026 permits a fee up to $200.)
  • Lower fare on the same flight: 4.0/10 (JetBlue's published procedure is to cancel and rebook online at the current price. This describes the documented procedure, not a verified prohibition on every agent-assisted adjustment.)
  • Credit terms: 10.0/10 (Resolved: null is correct for this field, which measures validity from credit issuance. Rebooking and cancelling does not extend expiration, and expired credit is not redeposited.; transferable: yes)
  • Cancel the standard fare: 7.0/10 (Cancel before scheduled departure without a cancellation fee; ticket value becomes JetBlue travel credit, not an original-payment refund.)
  • Risk-free window: 7.0/10 (For direct flight bookings made at least seven days before departure, cancel the entire reservation within 24 hours of purchase for a full original-payment refund without a cancellation penalty, including Base fares. JetBlue Vacations reservations are excluded. This is cancellation after payment, not an unpaid hold.)
  • Same-day change: 7.0/10 (Main and other standard fares have a $100-per-person same-day switch/standby fee without a fare difference; Flex fares include these benefits. Travel-agent guidance requires the same cabin, although the Mint FAQ separately permits Mint-to-Main switches.)
