American Airlines rating
Worth considering in Main Cabin, less convincing in Basic Economy
Axel considers American Airlines a reasonable value in Main Cabin, where fee-free changes and credit for eligible fare drops offer useful protection on trips originating in the Americas. Basic Economy is a much weaker bargain once checked bags, paid seat selection and lost flexibility matter. Middling punctuality, above-median complaints and recent AAdvantage cuts keep American from being an easy first choice.
- Best
- Main Cabin has no change fee for trips originating in North or South America.
- Basic Economy includes an overhead-bin carry-on and a personal item.
- Children 14 and under get an adjacent accompanying-adult seat free when the published conditions are met.
- Worst
- Basic Economy is excluded from American's same-itinerary repricing policy.
- A first domestic checked bag in Basic Economy costs $50 online or $55 at the airport each direction.
- The complaint rate was 8.33 per 100,000 passengers, above the U.S. airline median of 5.60.
If the fare drops after you book, can you get money back?
PartlyRepriceability 6.7/10
Partly. Completely unused AA-issued Main Cabin or higher tickets can be repriced on the same itinerary before travel if the lower published fare and required inventory remain available. Basic Economy and other nonchangeable fares are excluded. Ask Reservations. Main Cabin has no change fee for trips originating in North or South America, but fees can apply elsewhere. Nonrefundable savings become travel credit. Refundable savings can return to the original payment method. Online cancellation Trip Credit lasts 12 months for AAdvantage members with their number attached, or 6 months for nonmembers. Its printed expiry controls, with no guaranteed fresh term after repricing. Trip Credit can book anyone. Flight Credit is restricted to the original traveler, with travel generally beginning within one year of original ticket issuance. Cancel within 24 hours of purchase for a refund if booked at least seven days before departure, excluding group-block reservations.
Axel observed drops of at least 5% on 104 of 619 bookings checked September 10 to October 26, 2026, with a $68 median drop. Axel secured savings in 10 of 22 repricing attempts during that period, not a guarantee.

- Fare difference on a cheaper change
- As a credit. For nonrefundable Main Cabin, a qualifying voluntary change to a cheaper fare preserves the difference as travel credit, normally Trip Credit for a direct booking. Any applicable change penalty is deducted. American's residual-value policy covers unused and partially used tickets, subject to fare rules. Refundable tickets can return the eligible difference to the original payment method; exchanging a nonrefundable ticket into a refundable fare does not make the original money refundable.
- Same flight, lower price
- American's Rebook / Reprice Policy permits a completely unused AA-issued ticket to be repriced on the same itinerary before travel when a lower published fare and its required inventory are available. Basic Economy and other nonchangeable fares are excluded. For fee-free nonrefundable Main Cabin or higher fares, the saving is travel credit rather than cash. Ask Reservations to reprice the existing itinerary; the website may not offer the same flight at its lower price. Canceling for credit and rebooking is an alternative, not the only policy mechanism. Refundable fares can return the difference to the original payment method. No automatic monitoring or minimum saving is published.
- Credits (Trip Credit; Flight Credit; Travel Voucher)
- For online/app cancellations, Trip Credit lasts 12 months for AAdvantage members whose number is in the reservation and 6 months for nonmembers. The credit's printed expiration controls; American does not state that every repricing credit receives a fresh 12 months. Flight Credit generally requires travel to begin within one year of original ticket issuance. Paper Travel Vouchers generally last one year from issuance. Eligible disruption-related credits have five-year validity. Transferable: partial.
- 24-hour rule
- American's current policy allows cancellation within 24 hours of initial purchase for a refund when booked at least seven days before departure, including Basic Economy. Cancel the reservation to obtain the refund. Group-block reservations are excluded. The August 13, 2026 Conditions of Carriage and current customer-service FAQ say seven days; older indexed American FAQ text saying two days is not the current rule used here.
- Same-day change
- Confirmed same-day changes start at $60 within the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, and on eligible Canada/Caribbean routes; JFK–London Heathrow starts at $150. Request online/app beginning 24 hours before departure, subject to availability. Airports, connection points and stop count must remain the same, on American-marketed and operated flights. Eligible domestic Main Select, unrestricted Y, Business/First and specified elite travelers receive complimentary changes. Domestic standby is free for all customers; only status members may stand by for a later flight. This special service is separate from an ordinary fare-difference-based ticket change. Basic Economy can qualify for the service.
- Schedule changes
- American's current Conditions of Carriage provide an original-payment refund when it cancels the flight or changes the itinerary by at least three hours domestically or four hours internationally, and the traveler declines the changed flight, rebooking and alternative compensation. Its FAQ additionally allows a refund for a schedule change of at least 90 minutes made within 72 hours of scheduled departure. Airport changes, added connections and cabin downgrades also qualify when travel is declined. These protections include Basic Economy. American's four-hour international threshold is more generous than DOT's six-hour minimum. Eligible direct-booking refunds are automatic; refunds generally take seven business days for credit-card payments or 20 days for other payment methods.
What Axel's own data shows
- Of 619 American Airlines bookings Axel watched after purchase (September 10 to October 26, 2026), the same fare later dropped by at least 5% and $25 on 17%, by a median of 13% ($68).
- Axel asked American Airlines to return a lower fare 22 times between September 10 and October 26, 2026: 10 got the difference back, 3 were refused under the airline's rules, in 7 the lower fare was gone by the time Axel asked and 2 ended for other reasons (a cancelled trip, a ticket held by another agency).
- The fare rules on 284 American Airlines tickets Axel issued allowed changes on 32% of them, and where the rules said what happens to the difference on a cheaper new fare, it was kept as a credit on 81 of 91.

Refunds and disruptions
U.S. DOT rules require refunds when qualifying disrupted travel is declined. American promises original-payment refunds after cancellation or changes of at least three hours domestically or four internationally, including Basic Economy. Eligible direct-booking refunds are automatic, generally within seven business days for cards or 20 calendar days otherwise. For airline-controlled disruptions, American offers rebooking, meals after qualifying three-hour waits, and qualifying overnight hotels and transport. Obtain written authorization before booking a hotel yourself. EU261, UK261, Canada's APPR and Brazil's ANAC 400 apply by itinerary.
Routine refund delays or forced vouchers were not established in the reviewed record. On May 27, 2026, the Canadian Transportation Agency imposed CAD 33,000 for failing to provide requested compensation or explain nonpayment within 30 days.
Regulator actions since October 2021
- May 2026, Canadian Transportation Agency: CTA imposed a CAD 33,000 monetary penalty for 11 failures to provide requested compensation or an explanation of non-payment within 30 days. - July 2025, Canadian Transportation Agency: CTA imposed a CAD 52,200 monetary penalty for missing passenger-rights information and required notices on itinerary documents between December 4, 2024 and April 11, 2025. Reliability
U.S. DOT figures for April, May, July and August 2026 show 73.7% of arrivals on time and 2.14% of flights cancelled. That is a middling result, not a reason to pay American a premium. Separately, Cirium's calendar-year 2025 review recorded 76.43% on-time arrivals, defined as within 15 minutes of schedule, and a 2.1% cancellation rate calculated from its completion factor. The periods and sources differ.
Fees
Basic Economy includes an overhead-bin carry-on and a personal item. On newly purchased domestic tickets, its first checked bag costs $50 online or $55 at the airport each direction, versus $45 or $50 in Main Cabin. Seat selection costs extra in Basic Economy, but assignment at check-in is free. Children 14 and under get an adjacent adult seat free under the published conditions. Families should skip seat selection for everyone. Bags and selected seats can raise the final bill, but current mandatory charges added after the first displayed fare were not confirmed. On May 17, 2023, the Canadian Transportation Agency imposed CAD 1,100 for missing optional-service price information and incorrect charge presentation.
Complaints
DOT recorded 8.33 complaints per 100,000 passengers, versus a U.S. airline median of 5.60, including a refund rate of 2.06. These rates use complaint cases from April, May, July and August 2026 against passenger totals from April to June 2026. For the complaint months, DOT reported 0.59 mishandled bags per 100 bags and 1.21% mishandled wheelchairs and scooters. Bumping was 0.36 per 10,000 passengers in April to June 2026. U.S. DOT imposed a $50 million disability penalty in October 2024 for assistance and wheelchair-handling violations.
Loyalty program
AAdvantage awards are fully dynamically priced, and miles ordinarily expire after 24 months without qualifying earning or redemption. Members under 21 are exempt. American ended new fixed-chart mileage-upgrade requests after August 11, 2025, removing a published-price option. Basic Economy tickets bought from December 17, 2025 no longer earn miles or Loyalty Points, according to the current consumer page. Axel considers these cuts a clear weakness for travelers focused on price.
Choose American Airlines if
- Choose Main Cabin when flexibility and usable travel credit matter.
- Travel with just a carry-on and personal item to avoid checked-bag charges.
- You can use future travel credit rather than needing cash back.
Book elsewhere if
- You need to change a Basic Economy ticket after the refund window.
- You want cash back from a nonrefundable fare when prices fall.
- You prioritize low complaint rates and predictable mileage award prices.
Tips
- Ask Reservations to reprice an eligible unused ticket when the same flight becomes cheaper, since the website may not offer that option.
- Prepay a domestic checked bag online to pay $50 rather than $55 in Basic Economy.
- Add your AAdvantage number before canceling online so eligible cancellation Trip Credit lasts 12 months rather than 6.
Questions travelers ask
Does American Airlines charge change fees?
Main Cabin has no change fee for trips originating in North or South America, although any higher fare still costs extra. Tickets originating elsewhere can have change fees up to $400. Basic Economy generally cannot be changed after the qualifying 24-hour window, except specified Europe-origin fares with a fee. Confirmed same-day changes are separate and start at $60 on eligible routes.
Can I get money back if the ticket price drops?
Eligible nonrefundable tickets can return the difference as travel credit, not cash. American permits completely unused AA-issued tickets to be repriced on the same itinerary before travel when the lower published fare and required inventory are available. Basic Economy and other nonchangeable fares are excluded. Ask Reservations to reprice the existing itinerary. Refundable tickets can return the eligible difference to the original payment method.
How long do American Airlines credits last?
For online or app cancellations, Trip Credit lasts 12 months for AAdvantage members whose number is in the reservation, or 6 months for nonmembers. Its printed expiry controls, and a repricing credit is not guaranteed a fresh 12 months. Trip Credit can book anyone, but Flight Credit is limited to the original traveler and generally requires travel to begin within one year of original ticket issuance. Eligible disruption credits last five years.
What do I get if American Airlines cancels my flight?
You can receive a refund to your original payment method if American cancels and you decline rebooking or alternative compensation, including on Basic Economy. Eligible direct-booking refunds are automatic, generally within seven business days for cards or 20 calendar days otherwise. For airline-controlled disruptions, qualifying waits bring meals and qualifying overnight stays bring hotels and transport. Weather normally does not receive the same meal or hotel coverage.
How much do carry-on and checked bags cost?
Basic Economy includes an overhead-bin carry-on and a personal item free. For new domestic tickets, its first checked bag costs $50 online or $55 at the airport each direction. Main Cabin costs $45 or $50. Basic Economy's first transatlantic bag is generally $85, while routes to or from Asia, India, Qatar, Australia and New Zealand include a checked bag. Status or card exemptions may apply.

American Airlines rating: 6.2/10 (B tier)
Worth considering in Main Cabin, less convincing in Basic Economy
Axel considers American Airlines a reasonable value in Main Cabin, where fee-free changes and credit for eligible fare drops offer useful protection on trips originating in the Americas. Basic Economy is a much weaker bargain once checked bags, paid seat selection and lost flexibility matter. Middling punctuality, above-median complaints and recent AAdvantage cuts keep American from being an easy first choice.

If the fare drops after you book, can you get money back? Partly

Key facts
- Fare difference on a cheaper change: As a credit.
- Same flight, lower price: American's Rebook / Reprice Policy permits a completely unused AA-issued ticket to be repriced on the same itinerary before travel when a lower published fare and its required inventory are available.
- Credits (Trip Credit; Flight Credit; Travel Voucher): For online/app cancellations, Trip Credit lasts 12 months for AAdvantage members whose number is in the reservation and 6 months for nonmembers.
- 24-hour rule: American's current policy allows cancellation within 24 hours of initial purchase for a refund when booked at least seven days before departure, including Basic Economy. Cancel the reservation to obtain the refund. Group-block reservations are excluded. The August 13, 2026 Conditions of Carriage and current customer-service FAQ say seven days; older indexed American FAQ text saying two days is not the current rule used here.
- Same-day change: Confirmed same-day changes start at $60 within the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S.
- Schedule changes: American's current Conditions of Carriage provide an original-payment refund when it cancels the flight or changes the itinerary by at least three hours domestically or four hours internationally, and the traveler declines the changed flight, rebooking and alternative compensation.

The cited incidents occurred between February 9 and July 24, 2025. A date-specific USD conversion was not verified. Source
- February 2026, Canadian Transportation Agency: CTA imposed a CAD 2,500 monetary penalty for failing to provide reasonable assistance and information requested by an enforcement officer on February 25, 2026. The published notice does not identify the underlying passenger issue. A date-specific USD conversion was not verified. Source
- July 2025, Canadian Transportation Agency: CTA imposed a CAD 52,200 monetary penalty for missing passenger-rights information and required notices on itinerary documents between December 4, 2024 and April 11, 2025. The notice identifies eight terms-and-conditions violations, eight treatment/compensation/recourse-information violations and 18 prescribed-notice violations. A date-specific USD conversion was not verified. Source

A date-specific USD conversion was not verified. Source
- May 2023, Canadian Transportation Agency: CTA imposed a CAD 1,100 monetary penalty over January 2023 advertising on aa.com: failure to provide total prices for optional incidental services and failure to group third-party charges under the required taxes, fees and charges heading. A date-specific USD conversion was not verified. Source
Reliability
