Frontier Airlines rating
Basic Fare savings require light packing and tolerance for weak disruption support
Axel recommends Frontier only when the total price after bags and seats clearly beats the alternatives. Economy Bundle removes ordinary change fees, but cheaper replacement flights do not return the difference, and Basic Fare becomes expensive to change close to departure. High complaint rates, weak disruption commitments and poor punctuality make this a poor choice when arriving on time matters.
- Best
- Economy Bundle includes a carry-on, standard seat selection and no ordinary change fee.
- Bundles can be cancelled before departure without a cancellation fee for eligible travel credit.
- Children age 13 or younger can sit beside an accompanying adult free, subject to policy conditions.
- Worst
- Only 69% of flights arrived on time in DOT's April, May, July and August 2026 data.
- A cheaper replacement itinerary forfeits the fare difference rather than returning cash or residual credit.
- Frontier does not commit to hotels or rebooking on other airlines as standard disruption support.
If the fare drops after you book, can you get money back?
RarelyRepriceability 5.3/10
Rarely. A confirmed route exists within 24 hours of direct purchase when departure is at least seven days away: cancel for an original-payment refund and buy the cheaper ticket. Outside that window, same-flight price-drop recovery is unconfirmed. Economy Bundle has no ordinary change or cancellation fee before departure, but a cheaper change forfeits the difference. Cancellation returns eligible value as credit, not cash, and retaining unused credit after cheaper rebooking is unconfirmed. For Basic Fare booked from September 25, 2026, changes cost $149 per passenger, per direction within 59 days, or $0 at least 60 days out. Basic Fare cancellation costs $149 per passenger, per direction. Fare and options increases still apply.
Voluntary-cancellation credits expire after 12 months, are restricted to the original passengers and cannot be cashed out. Check the individual expiry because the booking-versus-travel deadline is unclear. Credits accepted instead of a legally required disruption refund last at least five years. Axel observed one successful recovery in one attempt from September 10 to October 26, 2026, too small a sample to establish a dependable recovery rate.

- Fare difference on a cheaper change
- Lost. Changing an Economy Bundle ticket to a lower-value itinerary produces no refund or residual credit. Frontier applies this rule to other fares as well. A zero change fee does not preserve the difference; increases in fare and options prices remain payable.
- Same flight, lower price
- A reliable fee-free price-drop recovery method outside the qualifying 24-hour window remains unconfirmed. Frontier's change FAQ, updated September 24, 2026, says a cheaper replacement flight produces no refund or credit. Its cancellation FAQ, also updated September 24, permits cancellation online or in the app for travel credit, without a cancellation fee on bundles. However, its flight-credit FAQ, updated June 12, 2026, does not say whether unused credit survives a cheaper rebooking. The Points Guy says the balance remains; NerdWallet says credits are one-time-use and the remainder is lost. Both contain outdated fee information. Therefore, cancel_and_rebook_only would overstate the verified savings benefit. Within 24 hours of purchase, when departure is at least seven days away, cancel for an original-payment refund and purchase the cheaper ticket.
- Credits (Flight credit / Credit with Frontier)
- Frontier's current bundle page advertises 12-month flight-credit expiration. An indexed official Contract of Carriage bearing revision date January 16, 2026 specifies 365 days from voluntary cancellation. Check the particular credit's expiration; the current readable credit FAQ does not clearly distinguish a booking deadline from a travel-completion deadline. Credits accepted instead of a legally required disruption refund are a separate category with a DOT minimum validity of five years. Transferable: no.
- 24-hour rule
- Tickets purchased directly from Frontier can be cancelled within 24 hours of purchase for a full refund to the original payment method when departure is at least seven days away. This includes Basic Fare and can be processed on the website or mobile app. It is a cancellation/refund option, not a confirmed free 24-hour hold or a guarantee of free changes. Frontier separately provides a broader statutory refund window for eligible travel originating in Colombia.
- Same-day change
- For the separately named Same Day Confirmed Flight Change service, Frontier's current Optional Services page lists $149 per passenger, per direction, non-refundable; that page displays no update date. Its fare-inclusions FAQ, updated March 25, 2026, also says this service requires a fee. This must be distinguished from ordinary itinerary changes: the change FAQ, updated September 24, 2026, says bundles have no change fees at any time, and the current Change and Cancel Policy explicitly shows $0 for bundles in its including-same-day column. Fare/options increases still apply. Thus ordinary departure-day changes on Economy Bundle are fee-free, but the pages do not explicitly waive the separately listed confirmed-change service charge for bundles. The fee classification here refers to that named service, not every departure-day itinerary change.
- Schedule changes
- If Frontier cancels a flight or significantly changes it and the traveler declines travel, replacement transportation and credit, a refund to the original payment method is due. DOT timing thresholds are departure at least three hours earlier or arrival at least three hours later domestically, or six hours internationally. Different airports, additional connections, downgrades and specified accessibility changes can also qualify. Frontier's FAQ says greater than three/six hours, but DOT's inclusive thresholds govern the minimum refund right. Frontier offers rebooking or refunds through its disruption portal. Refund deadlines are seven business days for credit-card payments and 20 calendar days for other eligible payment methods.

Refunds and disruptions
U.S. DOT rules require an original-payment refund when Frontier cancels or significantly changes a flight and you decline alternatives. Mexico's Civil Aviation Law adds protections on covered services. Frontier promises its next available flight and meal vouchers for qualifying controllable disruptions, but not standard hotels or rebooking on other airlines. Refund complaints exceed the U.S. median.
In November 2022, U.S. DOT imposed $2,200,000 for untimely refunds. In December 2024, the Transportation Security Administration upheld $5,377,584 in unpaid security-fee liability for canceled tickets from 2016 to 2018, not a civil penalty or passenger settlement. The Tenth Circuit upheld that order on April 20, 2026. Frontier promises refund processing within seven business days. No substantiated routine refund delays or forced vouchers were established for October 2024 to October 2026, which does not prove consistent compliance.

- December 2024, Transportation Security Administration: A TSA final order upheld $5,377,584.15 in unpaid security-fee liability associated with canceled tickets from 2016–2018. Frontier had treated fees as refunded through credits that expired or were consumed by cancellation fees rather than returning the money to passengers or remitting it to TSA; the Tenth Circuit upheld the order on April 20, 2026. This amount is fee-remittance liability, not a civil penalty or passenger settlement. Source

Reliability
DOT recorded 69% on-time arrivals and 2.11% cancellations in April, May, July and August 2026. Cirium reported 72.14% on-time arrivals for January through December 2025. The corresponding 1.19% cancellation estimate is calculated from its 98.81% completion factor, not separately published by Cirium. In January 2025, U.S. DOT imposed $650,000 over chronically delayed flights. Payment terms were amended in April 2026 without a new violation finding.
Fees
Basic Fare includes a personal item up to 18 × 14 × 8 inches, not an overhead carry-on or checked bag. Bag prices vary by itinerary and purchase timing, with no universal price confirmed. Seat selection starts at $15 per passenger per segment, or accept a free check-in assignment. Children age 13 or younger sit beside an accompanying adult free when the same-reservation, availability, layout and seat-selection conditions are met. Economy Bundle includes a carry-on and standard seat selection, but no checked bag. No fee-display findings were recorded in five years, but the first displayed fare is not your total if you add bags or seats.
Complaints
Frontier drew 21.53 complaints per 100,000 passengers, versus a U.S. median of 5.60. Refund complaints were 5.35 per 100,000 passengers, versus 1.45. These rates use DOT cases from April, May, July and August 2026 against April to June 2026 passenger counts. DOT's April, May, July and August 2026 figures also show 0.52 mishandled bags per 100 bags and 1.49% mishandled wheelchairs and scooters. Bumping was 1.09 per 10,000 passengers in April to June 2026.
Loyalty program
FRONTIER Miles expire after 12 months without qualifying mileage-accrual activity, including eligible credit-card purchases. Redeeming miles does not reset expiry. Award pricing is not confirmed. Announced August 27, 2026, changes effective September 1, 2026 cut ordinary members' earning without a qualifying card to one mile per eligible dollar on Basic Fare and six with bundles, down from 10. Those are cuts of 90% and 40%, with five days' notice.

Questions travelers ask
Does Frontier charge change fees?
For Basic Fare bookings made on or after September 25, 2026, changes cost $149 per passenger, per direction within 59 days of departure, or $0 at least 60 days out. Economy Bundle, Premium Bundle and Business Bundle have no ordinary change fee, including departure-day changes. Fare and options increases still apply. The separately named Same Day Confirmed Flight Change service lists a $149 fee per passenger, per direction, with no explicit bundle waiver.
Can I get money back if Frontier's price drops after booking?
Only the qualifying 24-hour refund window provides a confirmed route. For tickets bought directly from Frontier at least seven days before departure, cancel within 24 hours for an original-payment refund and buy the cheaper ticket. Outside that window, a cheaper change forfeits the difference. Bundles allow cancellation for credit, but whether unused credit survives a cheaper rebooking is unconfirmed.
How long do Frontier flight credits last?
Frontier advertises 12-month expiry, and its Contract of Carriage dated January 16, 2026 specifies 365 days from voluntary cancellation. Check your particular credit because the booking deadline versus travel-completion deadline is unclear. Only the original passengers can use it, with matching names. Credits accepted instead of a legally required disruption refund are separate and must remain valid for at least five years.
What do I get if Frontier cancels my flight?
An original-payment refund is due if Frontier cancels or significantly changes your flight and you decline travel, replacement transportation and credit. DOT timing triggers include departure at least three hours earlier or arrival at least three hours later domestically, or six hours internationally. Refund deadlines are seven business days for credit-card payments and 20 calendar days for other eligible payments. Frontier also promises rebooking on its next available flight and meal vouchers for qualifying controllable disruptions, but not standard hotel coverage.
How much do carry-on and checked bags cost on Frontier?
There is no universal published bag price. Frontier directs travelers to its itinerary-specific Bag Price Checker, and checked-bag prices also depend on travel date and purchase timing. Basic Fare includes only a personal item. Economy Bundle and Premium Bundle include an overhead carry-on but no checked bag. Business Bundle includes a carry-on and two checked bags up to 50 pounds each. Frontier advertises booking-stage bag purchases as cheapest.

Key facts
- Fare difference on a cheaper change: Lost. Changing an Economy Bundle ticket to a lower-value itinerary produces no refund or residual credit. Frontier applies this rule to other fares as well. A zero change fee does not preserve the difference; increases in fare and options prices remain payable.
- Same flight, lower price: A reliable fee-free price-drop recovery method outside the qualifying 24-hour window remains unconfirmed.
- Credits (Flight credit / Credit with Frontier): Frontier's current bundle page advertises 12-month flight-credit expiration. An indexed official Contract of Carriage bearing revision date January 16, 2026 specifies 365 days from voluntary cancellation. Check the particular credit's expiration; the current readable credit FAQ does not clearly distinguish a booking deadline from a travel-completion deadline.
- Schedule changes: If Frontier cancels a flight or significantly changes it and the traveler declines travel, replacement transportation and credit, a refund to the original payment method is due. DOT timing thresholds are departure at least three hours earlier or arrival at least three hours later domestically, or six hours internationally. - Standard fare change fee: 10.0/10 (Economy Bundle: no change fee)
- Lowest fare flexibility: 4.0/10 (Basic Fare: For bookings made on or after September 25, 2026: $0 at least 60 days before departure; $149 per passenger, per direction at 59 days or less, including same-day changes. Any increase in fare and options prices is additional.)
- Lower fare on the same flight: 0.0/10 (Economy Bundle changes to a cheaper fare forfeit the difference, with no refund or residual credit. Although cancellation is fee-free for travel credit, the facts do not confirm that unused credit survives a cheaper rebooking outside the 24-hour refund window.)
- Credit terms: 7.0/10 (Frontier's current bundle page advertises 12-month flight-credit expiration. An indexed official Contract of Carriage bearing revision date January 16, 2026 specifies 365 days from voluntary cancellation. Check the particular credit's expiration; the current readable credit FAQ does not clearly distinguish a booking deadline from a travel-completion deadline. Credits accepted instead of a legally required disruption refund are a separate category with a DOT minimum validity of five years.; transferable: no)
- Cancel the standard fare: 7.0/10 (No cancellation fee before departure. Eligible itinerary value becomes travel credit rather than a payment-method refund. The full bundle price is credited; the general cancellation policy excludes certain carrier charges.)
- Risk-free window: 7.0/10 (Tickets purchased directly from Frontier can be cancelled within 24 hours of purchase for a full refund to the original payment method when departure is at least seven days away. This includes Basic Fare and can be processed on the website or mobile app. It is a cancellation/refund option, not a confirmed free 24-hour hold or a guarantee of free changes. Frontier separately provides a broader statutory refund window for eligible travel originating in Colombia.)
- Same-day change: 7.0/10 (For the separately named Same Day Confirmed Flight Change service, Frontier's current Optional Services page lists $149 per passenger, per direction, non-refundable; that page displays no update date. The fee classification here refers to that named service, not every departure-day itinerary change.)

Regulator actions since October 2021
- January 2025, U.S. DOT: Order 2025-1-2: Held out chronically delayed flights; $650,000 (payment terms amended by Order 2026-4-11). Source
Source
- November 2022, U.S. DOT: Order 2022-11-12: Failed to provide timely refunds to tens of thousands of consumers for significantly changed flights; $2.2 million. Source
Choose Frontier Airlines if
- You can travel with only the included personal item and skip paid seat selection.
- You find Economy Bundle cheaper than competing fares after adding the extras you need.
- You can tolerate limited airline support if a disruption occurs.
Book elsewhere if
- You need dependable punctuality for a time-sensitive trip.
- You expect hotels or rebooking on another airline after a controllable disruption.
- You want confirmed recovery of fare drops outside the qualifying refund window.
Tips
- Compare Economy Bundle with Basic Fare plus your carry-on and seat-selection charges before buying.
- Measure your personal item against the 18 × 14 × 8 inch limit before deciding to skip a paid bag.
- Buy any checked bag during booking, when Frontier advertises its cheapest bag prices.
