Around La Placita and Avenida Ponce de León, you get market-square bars, Puerto Rican cooking, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. It makes sense when dinner, exhibitions and music are the point of the trip.

    Isla Verde, in neighboring Carolina, is where I'd choose sand and an easy airport arrival over historic atmosphere. Avenida Isla Verde links beachfront towers, places to eat and evening lounges, with the broad beach the main reason to stay. It works particularly well for families planning to spend much of the trip by the water.
