How Axel works

Where to stay in Reykjavik: the 5 best neighborhoods, ranked

Updated October 20, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank

Stay in Old Town & Harpa for a first visit: historic streets, museums and the waterfront are easy to explore on foot. Families should choose Laugardalur for pools and parks. Laugavegur & Hallgrímskirkja suits bakery mornings and nights out; choose a side street for less noise. Hlemmur & Borgartún is the budget pick, but check construction and diverted bus stops.

Reykjavik’s central streets favour walking, dining and late nights, while the harbour offers dockside character and Laugardalur puts recreation first, so Axel balances ease of exploring, what is nearby, hotel quality, value for money and the appeal of the neighbourhood itself, giving the most weight to that last consideration.

    Old Town & Harpa

historic streets · café squares · waterfront architecture · late-night bars

    8.4/10

Stay here for the easiest introduction to Reykjavík, but choose your street carefully.

Old Town wins overall for historic character, easy exploring and strong hotels, but value is weaker and bar-street noise needs checking.

Old Reykjavík around Aðalstræti and Austurvöllur makes an easy all-round base: older streets, the Settlement Exhibition, Tjörnin and the harbourfront fit naturally into the same day. Harpa adds concerts and conferences without separating you from the older town. Stay here when you want to wander out for dinner rather than organise each outing.

The catch is that central does not mean quiet. Austurstræti and the nearby bar streets belong to Reykjavík's nightlife district. Ask about street-facing noise rather than assuming a historic address guarantees sleep. Skip this area if a residential evening atmosphere matters more than having the city immediately outside.

    Laugavegur & Hallgrímskirkja

independent shops · rainbow street · bakery mornings · bar-hopping · church views

    8.4/10

Choose this for shopping and nights out, with quieter streets toward the church.

Excellent access and strong hotels put Laugavegur close behind Old Town, with slightly better value but less historic character.

Laugavegur puts shops, bakeries and bars outside the door; Skólavörðustígur climbs through galleries and the rainbow-painted stretch to Hallgrímskirkja. Sundhöllin adds a neighbourhood pool rather than another sightseeing stop. This is the strongest choice for shopping and LGBTQ+ nightlife, with Kíkí on Laugavegur rather than in a separate gay district.

The important distinction is the street, not just the postcode: a room above Laugavegur's bars is a different proposition from a side street near the church. Recent visitor discussions favour streets south of the main drag when noise matters. Skip a main-street room if you need an early night before excursions.

Grandagarður still feels like a working waterfront, with old industrial buildings reused for food, design and museums. The Maritime Museum and Grandi's food hall make it especially good for travellers who enjoy a harbour walk between meals. The Reykjavík Grapevine's 2026 dining guide also singles out the food hall's range.

Don't mistake the Old Harbour's near-town edge for the whole district: walking back from Grandi takes longer than staying by Austurvöllur. Recent visitors disagree about that trade-off, which is telling. Choose it for dockside character and unhurried dinners, not the shortest route home from Laugavegur's bars.

    Hlemmur & Borgartún

food-hall lunches · office streets · eastern Laugavegur · seafront walks · street works

    7.3/10

A practical eastern base, with Hlemmur construction the important catch.

Strong access and the best hotel value help Hlemmur, but fewer nearby attractions, less distinctive streets and construction hold it back.

Hlemmur is where Laugavegur meets a more everyday city of food-hall lunches, bus stops and the offices along Borgartún. It suits work trips near Höfðatorg and travellers happy to walk west for sightseeing. The seafront by Höfði gives this end of town an alternative to the shopping street.

Construction is the major caveat. The city's February 2026 update scheduled the next Hlemmur works from April 2026 through the end of 2027, and Strætó diverts buses around the square. Check the actual stop and street access before booking. Skip it if you want a historic setting or cannot tolerate changing pedestrian routes.

    Laugardalur

geothermal swimming · botanical gardens · family recreation · sports grounds · quieter evenings

    6.4/10

Choose pools, parks and sport over downtown convenience.

Good hotels and pool-and-park appeal suit specialist trips, but fewer nearby restaurants and longer downtown journeys weaken its all-round ranking.

Laugardalur is for a different rhythm: swimming at Laugardalslaug, walks through the botanical garden, children at the Family Park and Zoo, and sport around Laugardalsvöllur. Ásmundarsafn adds sculpture without a trip downtown. The hostel and campsite give budget travellers a reason to look here beyond the park, especially on longer stays.

The trade-off is returning downtown for the classic Reykjavík evening. This is not a convenient base for repeated trips between your room and Laugavegur, and buses require timetable awareness, especially on Sundays. Stay for family activities, sport or quieter evenings; skip it for a short first visit built around restaurants and nightlife.

How Axel ranks neighborhoods

Axel ranks each neighborhood as a base for a visitor, not as a place to visit. Five scores out of 10 are blended into the score beside each name. The pages for each kind of trip weight how well a neighborhood fits that trip more heavily.

  • Getting around (20%): How many of the city’s most-visited sights are within easy reach, plus a direct train to the airport.
  • On your doorstep (15%): Places to eat, drink and see within a 10-minute walk, counted from OpenStreetMap.
  • Hotels (20%): Axel’s own reviews of the hotels here, and how many good ones there are to choose from.
  • Value (10%): Hotel quality for the money, from the rates Axel saw in the last 30 days, against the city as a whole.
  • Axel’s verdict (35%): How good a base it is for a visitor, from research into guides, forums, transit and local news.

Questions travelers ask

Is Old Town or Laugavegur better for a first stay in Reykjavik?

Old Town & Harpa is the better all-round first-visit base, with historic streets, museums, Tjörnin and the waterfront easy to combine on foot. Laugavegur & Hallgrímskirkja comes next and suits shopping, bakeries and nights out particularly well. Both have strong hotels. Choose by your plans, then check the street: Old Town’s bar streets can be just as noisy as Laugavegur.

Where should families stay in Reykjavik?

Laugardalur is the first choice for families whose days revolve around swimming, gardens and the Family Park and Zoo. Old Town & Harpa is runner-up if walking between the main sights matters more than recreation nearby. Laugardalur means more planning for downtown outings, especially around Sunday bus timetables; Old Town means checking carefully for bar-street noise.

What is the cheapest good area to stay in Reykjavik?

Hlemmur & Borgartún is the strongest budget choice, with the best hotel value in this ranking and typical rates below the city median. It still gives you eastern Laugavegur and a walk west toward downtown. Laugardalur is the next option, with below-median hotel rates plus a hostel and campsite. Check Hlemmur’s construction and temporary bus stops before booking.

Where should I stay without a car, and how do I get there from the airports?

Old Town & Harpa is the best car-free base, followed by Laugavegur & Hallgrímskirkja: both make central sightseeing and meals straightforward on foot. There is no airport rail. From Keflavík, use Flybus to BSÍ with a booked onward shuttle; confirm the onward transfer for Laugardalur. From Reykjavík’s domestic airport, a taxi is the simplest option for these areas.

Is Laugavegur a good place to stay, or is it too noisy?

Laugavegur is an excellent base for shopping and nightlife, and ranks second overall, but a room facing the bars can be noisy late. Visitors seeking better sleep favour residential streets south of the main street, toward Hallgrímskirkja. Keep the neighbourhood’s convenience while checking the exact frontage; skip a main-street room if early starts and reliable sleep are priorities.

Where should I stay for business meetings or a convention in Reykjavik?

Hlemmur & Borgartún ranks first for business trips, especially meetings around Borgartún and Höfðatorg. For a conference at Harpa, choose Old Town & Harpa instead: it is the runner-up overall for business and puts the venue within an easy walk. Hlemmur works were scheduled from April 2026 through the end of 2027, so confirm street access and bus stops.

Should I stay near Laugardalslaug if swimming is a priority?

Yes—Laugardalur is the best base if Laugardalslaug and regular swimming are central to your plans, especially alongside parks or sport at Laugardalsvöllur. It is also the strongest choice for quieter evenings. If swimming is only one part of a short sightseeing trip, Laugavegur & Hallgrímskirkja offers Sundhöllin nearby while keeping shops, dining and downtown walks more convenient.
