Rittenhouse Square
leafy square · sidewalk dining · Walnut Street shopping · polished neighborhood
8.3/10
Our easiest recommendation for a first Philadelphia stay.
Excellent access and the strongest neighborhood character put Rittenhouse first, supported by good hotels, though value is weaker than its all-round appeal.

Rittenhouse is our easiest all-round recommendation: a lived-in neighborhood around a leafy park, with Walnut and Chestnut Street shopping, sidewalk tables and restaurants that make the evening part of the trip. Locals answering first-visit questions repeatedly steer travelers here. City Hall and the Schuylkill riverfront are straightforward walks.
The trade-off is that the colonial sights and Parkway museums are outings rather than your immediate doorstep. Choose it for relaxed wandering, shopping and dinners without much planning. Skip it if nearly every day revolves around Independence Hall, or if you want residential quiet without checking whether your room faces a busy restaurant street.

- Skip it if
- Your itinerary is almost entirely colonial history; You want consistently quiet streets
- Getting around
- Walk to shops, theaters and City Hall; T trolleys stop at 19th/Market, with L and B trains at 15th St/City Hall; from PHL, take the Airport Line to Suburban Station and walk south.
- After dark
- Dinner and bar activity carries into the evening; restaurant-facing rooms merit a noise check.
