Where to stay in Myrtle Beach: the 7 best neighborhoods, ranked
Updated October 15, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank
Stay in Downtown Myrtle Beach & the Boardwalk for a first visit, walkable sightseeing, casual food and nightlife. Midtown & the Golden Mile is our family pick, trading doorstep attractions for calmer beach days. For budget trips, Coastal Grand Mall & Airport Area ranks first if you can forgo beachfront living; South Myrtle Beach is the beach-first alternative.
Think of Myrtle Beach as a choice between Boardwalk convenience, calmer beachfront stretches and inland entertainment or airport practicality, with Axel ranking each area on access to sights, things within a short walk, hotel quality, value and character, then adjusting the order for different kinds of trips.
Stay here for the classic Myrtle Beach experience without constant driving.
First overall for classic seaside character, the strongest access and nearby scores, and solid hotels; evening noise is the main compromise.

Ocean Boulevard around the SkyWheel delivers the familiar Myrtle Beach mix: beach access, souvenir shops, casual food and attractions connected by the Boardwalk. This is our first choice if your ideal day moves easily from sand to sightseeing to an evening stroll, without repeatedly collecting the car.
The trade-off is atmosphere rather than convenience. Visitors report traffic noise and revving engines, and the strip suits people who enjoy being among other vacationers. Downtown's inland arts district is still developing, not a finished cultural quarter. Skip it if peaceful evenings matter more than having the action outside.

Skip it if
You want quiet evenings; You dislike tourist-strip crowds
Getting around
Walk the beach and Boardwalk; downtown buses meet at Ivory Wilson Transit Center, served directly from MYR by Route 7; taxis are another option.
After dark
The main strip stays lively in season; visitors report engine noise and drinking crowds, with less activity on surrounding side streets.
Top hotels by Axel's take
Typical Axel rate $124 a night · usually 9% under the public rate
Our best all-round beach base, with less noise than the Boardwalk.
The highest character score puts this calmer beachfront second, despite fewer doorstep options, weaker access and middling value.

North Ocean Boulevard becomes a different proposition as you approach the Golden Mile: beach houses, residential streets and a less attraction-heavy oceanfront. Locals steer visitors here when they want more breathing room on the sand. North Kings Highway adds established dining options, including around 44th through 51st Avenues North.
Stay here for a beach-led trip that still includes downtown and Broadway outings. The quieter residential blocks also mean fewer doorstep diversions, and Kings Highway is not a substitute for a pleasant pedestrian shopping street. A car remains useful. Skip it if you want to step straight into the Boardwalk's amusements every evening.

You want late-night entertainment outside; You expect a continuous walkable dining district
Getting around
Route 15N follows the northern Kings Highway corridor; walk locally to the beach, but drive for wider outings; from MYR, take a taxi or Route 7 downtown and transfer.
After dark
Expect quieter residential evenings and restaurant outings rather than Boardwalk-style crowds, especially along the Golden Mile.

Choose the south end for uncomplicated beach days, not downtown walkability.
Solid hotels, reasonable value and useful airport access secure third place, but scattered nearby options limit walking holidays.

South Ocean Boulevard is straightforward beach-holiday territory, with oceanfront accommodation, mini-golf and casual eating places. Family Kingdom anchors its northern end, while the airport is conveniently nearby. LGBTQ travelers also have a specific reason to consider the south end: Pulse Ultra Club is on South Kings Highway.
Do not confuse staying beside the beach with staying beside the Boardwalk. Along the southern avenues, downtown outings require a longer walk or a ride, and useful businesses become more scattered. Recent visitors staying around 17th Avenue South recommended a car, particularly outside summer. Skip it if you want a self-contained walking holiday.

You want the Boardwalk outside; You want varied evenings entirely on foot
Getting around
Route 15S serves the south-end corridor; beach walks are straightforward, but broader sightseeing needs transport; from MYR, a taxi is simpler than a downtown bus connection.
After dark
Evening activity is scattered rather than continuous; visitors report especially quiet surroundings and seasonal closures outside summer.

Choose Broadway when attractions and evening entertainment matter more than beachfront living.
Good attraction access and nearby entertainment support fourth place; weaker hotel and value scores keep it below the beachfront leaders.

Broadway is a purpose-built entertainment district around Lake Broadway, not a seaside neighborhood despite the name. Ripley's Aquarium, WonderWorks, shops, restaurants and theaters make it easy to fill a day without leaving the complex. Nearby Pelicans baseball and Topgolf strengthen the case for an activity-heavy stay.
Its pedestrian convenience works best inside the attraction complex. The beach is a separate outing, and surrounding roads and parking areas make casual neighborhood wandering less rewarding. Choose it for shows, family attractions or evenings out; skip it if swimming before breakfast and returning easily from the sand are the point of your holiday.

Getting around
Route 10 serves Broadway; walk within the complex and drive or ride to the beach; from MYR, take a taxi or Route 7 downtown and transfer to Route 10.
After dark
Restaurants, bars and shows keep the complex active; The Avenue concentrates evening venues, while surrounding parking areas feel less like a strolling district.

Useful for a flight or practical stopover, not a beach holiday.
The strongest value score and joint-highest hotel score earn fifth, but commercial character and limited doorstep interest weaken its holiday appeal.

Around Coastal Grand Circle, Seaboard Street and Harrelson Boulevard, the appeal is practical: airport access, indoor shopping, casual restaurants, bowling and a cinema. This is commercial Myrtle Beach rather than coastal Myrtle Beach, and it can work for a short business stay or a night organized around a flight.
We would not make it the default base for a first beach vacation. You exchange immediate access to the shore for convenient errands, and nearly every classic coastal experience becomes an outing. Walking to a nearby restaurant may be possible, but that is different from having an enjoyable neighborhood to explore.

Route 10 serves Coastal Grand Mall; shopping and some restaurants are walkable locally, but beaches require transport; MYR is a short taxi ride away.

Windy Hill and the southern North Myrtle Beach shore suit travelers who want beach days without making downtown Myrtle Beach their daily backdrop. Across U.S. 17, Barefoot Landing adds waterfront restaurants, shops and entertainment, with Alabama Theatre and House of Blues giving evenings a clear focus beyond the sand.
Treat the oceanfront and Barefoot Landing as separate outings, not one seamless pedestrian district. Central Myrtle Beach sightseeing adds another drive. U.S. 17 intersection improvements near Windy Hill began in September 2026, with overnight disruption possible until anticipated completion in June 2027. Skip it if frequent Boardwalk visits or a car-free itinerary are priorities.

Route 17 calls at Barefoot Landing; the beach and shopping district need separate planning; from MYR, transfer from Route 7 to Route 17 downtown or take a taxi/rental car.
After dark
Barefoot Landing draws dinner and show crowds; the beach-focused surroundings offer a calmer alternative to downtown Myrtle Beach's strip.
Stay here for quieter beach days, golf and destination dinners.
Resort character and solid hotels suit specialist stays, but very limited nearby choice and weak sightseeing access leave it seventh overall.

Shore Drive and Arcadian Shores favor repeat beachgoers, golf outings and a slower daily rhythm. Grande Dunes adds marina-side dining and landscaped surroundings. There is also a stronger dining case than the resort setting suggests: Eater highlights restaurants around northern Kings Highway, Grande Dunes Marketplace and Lake Arrowhead Road.
The catch is separation. Oceanfront addresses, the marina and Restaurant Row do not form one walkable village; choosing the wrong address for your priorities means driving even on otherwise lazy days. Shore Drive's beach bars can also be lively. Skip it if you want downtown attractions or spontaneous restaurant-hopping on foot.

Route 15N serves Kings Highway near 82nd Parkway and Route 17 serves Kings Road farther north; local beach access varies; MYR taxi or rental car is simplest.

Generally low-key away from dining venues, but Shore Drive's beach bars are a livelier exception rather than a guarantee of silence.

Axel ranks each neighborhood as a base for a visitor, not as a place to visit. Five scores out of 10 are blended into the score beside each name. The pages for each kind of trip weight how well a neighborhood fits that trip more heavily.
Getting around (20%): How many of the city’s most-visited sights are within easy reach, plus a direct train to the airport.
On your doorstep (15%): Places to eat, drink and see within a 10-minute walk, counted from OpenStreetMap.
Hotels (20%): Axel’s own reviews of the hotels here, and how many good ones there are to choose from.
Value (10%): Hotel quality for the money, from the rates Axel saw in the last 30 days, against the city as a whole.
Axel’s verdict (35%): How good a base it is for a visitor, from research into guides, forums, transit and local news.

Questions travelers ask
Should I stay near the Boardwalk or on the Golden Mile?
Choose Downtown Myrtle Beach & the Boardwalk for a first visit built around classic attractions and walking; choose Midtown & the Golden Mile for calmer beach days. Downtown ranks first overall, with better access and more nearby options. Midtown ranks second and leads for families and couples, but its residential stretches mean fewer doorstep diversions and more driving.
What is the best area of Myrtle Beach for families?
Midtown & the Golden Mile is our first choice for families, thanks to its calmer residential beachfront and beach-led rhythm. Broadway at the Beach is runner-up if the aquarium, WonderWorks and other attractions matter more than staying beside the sand. South Myrtle Beach follows for straightforward beach holidays, with mini-golf and Family Kingdom at its northern end.
What is the cheapest good area to stay in Myrtle Beach?
Coastal Grand Mall & Airport Area leads our budget ranking: it has the lowest typical rates against the city median, the strongest value score and a joint-leading hotel score. The compromise is staying inland. South Myrtle Beach is runner-up for budget travelers who want beach access, while Downtown follows with below-median typical rates and easier sightseeing on foot.
Where should I stay without a car, and how do I get there from MYR?
Stay Downtown near the Boardwalk for the strongest car-free base. Route 7 runs directly from Myrtle Beach International Airport to the downtown Ivory Wilson Transit Center; there is no airport rail. Once downtown, the beach, Boardwalk and SkyWheel work together on foot. Broadway is runner-up without a car, but its beach trips require separate transport planning.
Is Broadway at the Beach a good place to stay for nightlife?
Yes—Broadway ranks second for nightlife, behind Downtown Myrtle Beach & the Boardwalk. The Avenue concentrates evening venues, while restaurants and shows keep the wider complex active. Choose it for entertainment-led nights rather than oceanfront atmosphere. Walking is convenient inside the complex, but surrounding roads and parking areas are less appealing for casual strolling, and the beach is a separate outing.
Where should I stay for a Myrtle Beach convention or business trip?
Coastal Grand Mall & Airport Area leads our general business ranking for airport practicality, hotels and value; Downtown is runner-up for central access. For an event at Myrtle Beach Convention Center, also check Broadway-area addresses: the center appears among that area's nearby walkable sights. Confirm the route from your exact accommodation rather than choosing solely by neighborhood name.
Can I walk between Barefoot Landing and the beach?
Do not plan them as one seamless walking district. Barefoot Landing sits across U.S. 17 from the Windy Hill beachfront, so treat shopping, dinner and shows as separate outings from beach time. North Myrtle Beach & Barefoot Landing works for travelers happy to drive between activities; it ranks well below Downtown for staying without a car or making frequent Boardwalk visits.
