How Axel works

Where to stay in Minneapolis: the 6 best neighborhoods, ranked

Updated October 15, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank

Downtown Minneapolis ranks first overall and is the practical choice for car-free trips, conventions and budget-minded stays. North Loop & Mill District leads for first visits, families, food and nightlife: choose North Loop for restaurants or the Mill District for riverfront culture. Mall of America & Airport suits indoor-attraction trips; University of Minnesota & Dinkytown is the alternative for campus visits.

Think of Minneapolis as a choice between downtown convenience, North Loop restaurant streets and Mill District riverfront culture, with campus, Saint Paul and suburban stays serving more specific plans; Axel ranks each base on getting around, what's nearby, hotel quality, value and neighborhood character.

Best picks by trip

  1. Four Seasons Minneapolis Hotel, Downtown Minneapolis
    #1 of 6

    Downtown Minneapolis

office towers · historic theaters · skyway lunches · LGBTQ clubs

    7.5/10

The practical base for conventions, shows and car-free city trips.

The strongest access and useful hotel choices put Downtown first, though middling value and uneven evening street life limit its appeal.

Downtown is the practical choice for convention days, Hennepin Avenue shows and a trip without a car. Nicollet Mall, Orchestra Hall and First Avenue give you a clear set of landmarks, while surrounding office blocks feel more businesslike than residential. Established LGBTQ clubs are another reason to stay here.

Choose the block, not just the downtown label. Visitors describe a sharp contrast between busy entertainment streets and quiet stretches around the offices. The skyways help in winter, but many close early or on weekends; don't plan your evening around them. Skip this for neighborhood charm or reliably lively sidewalks.

    Skip it if
You want a residential neighborhood feel; You expect lively sidewalks on every block
    Getting around
Blue and Green Line trains run along 5th Street, with D and E rapid buses nearby; downtown venues are walkable, though convention-area lodging can be farther from rail; MSP has direct Blue Line service.
    After dark
Theater and club blocks draw crowds, while office streets can feel empty after work; the atmosphere changes noticeably block by block.

    North Loop & Mill District

brick warehouses · destination dining · river walks · mill history · boutique shopping

    7.5/10

Our best all-round choice, with restaurant streets or a calmer riverfront.

The strongest character and good hotels nearly match Downtown, but weaker value and slightly lower access keep it second.

Brick warehouses around Washington Avenue North hold North Loop's restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques. Farther east, the Mill District puts the Guthrie, Mill City Museum and river paths on your doorstep. Pick North Loop for dinner-and-drinks evenings, or the Mill District for scenery and culture; they are distinct neighborhoods, not one continuous restaurant strip.

This is our strongest all-round choice for a first visit, especially for couples and food lovers. Locals regularly recommend both, but check your address carefully: riverfront lodging does not automatically mean a short walk to rail, and North Loop's weekend bars can trouble light sleepers.

    University of Minnesota & Dinkytown

campus walks · student cafés · Gopher sports · college bars

Choose campus convenience and student energy over a downtown address.

Campus character and decent hotels earn third place, while fewer nearby options and weaker sightseeing access narrow its appeal.

Stay here when the University of Minnesota is part of the reason for your trip. Dinkytown's 4th Street Southeast and 14th Avenue Southeast bring student cafés, diners and bars; Stadium Village is handier for campus sports and Green Line stops. Campus walks and the Weisman Art Museum give the area more to do than eat between appointments.

The trade-off is a student-oriented atmosphere rather than a miniature downtown. Local reporting describes packed undergraduate bars, chain-store growth and quieter summer foot traffic. Choose a campus-facing or Stadium Village address if college nightlife is not your thing; first-timers without university plans usually have better options downtown.

    Getting around
Campus is walkable; Green Line stations include East Bank and Stadium Village, while Dinkytown has E Line buses on University Avenue and 4th Street; from MSP, change Blue to Green at U.S. Bank Stadium.
    After dark
Dinkytown's undergraduate bars can be packed late, and Gopher game nights add crowds; summer brings less student foot traffic.

  4. The Saint Paul Hotel, Downtown Saint Paul
    #4 of 6

    Downtown Saint Paul

historic architecture · family museums · Lowertown warehouses · hockey nights · river views

    5.3/10

A worthwhile second city, but a compromise for Minneapolis-focused trips.

The highest hotel and value scores cannot overcome weak access to Minneapolis sights, leaving this separate city fourth overall.

Saint Paul is its own city, not an outlying Minneapolis neighborhood. Stay downtown for the Science Museum, Minnesota Children's Museum, historic architecture and hockey or concerts at Grand Casino Arena. Lowertown adds Mears Park, the farmers market, CHS Field and a more residential warehouse-district feel. Families and travelers planning time in both cities have a solid reason to choose it.

For a Minneapolis-heavy itinerary, though, you're committing to repeated cross-town journeys. The Green Line is useful, not a quick hop. Residents also report early-closing businesses and quiet stretches between evening destinations. Skip it if you want to step outside into Minneapolis restaurants or nightlife every night.

    Mall of America & Airport

indoor attractions · mall shopping · airport logistics · suburban roads

Good hotels support mall and airport stays, but limited sightseeing access, modest value and suburban surroundings hold it back.

Stay here for a mall-focused family trip or an early flight, not to get a feel for Minneapolis. Around Lindau Lane and American Boulevard, the experience is shops, indoor attractions and airport logistics rather than neighborhood wandering. Nickelodeon Universe and SEA LIFE make weather-proof days straightforward, and the Blue Line gives this suburban base a useful city connection.

The catch is the walk from your room: some properties depend on shuttles rather than an appealing pedestrian route. Check that connection before booking. If your plans revolve around neighborhood restaurants, live music or the riverfront, stay in Minneapolis instead.

    After dark
Evenings focus on mall restaurants and attractions; outside, plan a return to your lodging rather than a neighborhood bar crawl.

Roseville is a functional suburban stop, with Rosedale Center and its Potluck food hall doing much of the visitor-facing work. Around Snelling Avenue, Fairview Avenue and Highway 36, shopping, dining and lodging sit among broad roads and parking lots. It makes most sense for drivers visiting people locally or combining errands and appointments across the Twin Cities.

Don't confuse a convenient driving location with a convenient city break. The A Line starts at Rosedale, but many places to stay are not an easy stroll from it. Choose this for low-key evenings and shopping, not for walking out to Minneapolis sights, independent nightlife or riverfront neighborhoods.

    Best for
    a quiet stayshopping
    Skip it if
You are visiting without a car; You want a walkable Minneapolis experience
    Getting around
Walking is mainly useful within shopping complexes; the A Line at Rosedale connects with Green and Blue rail, but lodging may require another local connection; from MSP, use Blue Line plus A Line or a taxi/rental car.
    After dark
Expect restaurant evenings and a return to your room, not a late-night walking circuit; lack of nightlife does not guarantee freedom from road noise.

How Axel ranks neighborhoods

Axel ranks each neighborhood as a base for a visitor, not as a place to visit. Five scores out of 10 are blended into the score beside each name. The pages for each kind of trip weight how well a neighborhood fits that trip more heavily.

  • Getting around (20%): How many of the city’s most-visited sights are within easy reach, plus a direct train to the airport.
  • On your doorstep (15%): Places to eat, drink and see within a 10-minute walk, counted from OpenStreetMap.
  • Hotels (20%): Axel’s own reviews of the hotels here, and how many good ones there are to choose from.
  • Value (10%): Hotel quality for the money, from the rates Axel saw in the last 30 days, against the city as a whole.
  • Axel’s verdict (35%): How good a base it is for a visitor, from research into guides, forums, transit and local news.

Questions travelers ask

Should I stay in Downtown Minneapolis or North Loop?

Choose Downtown Minneapolis for the strongest overall practical base; choose North Loop & Mill District for a first visit, restaurants and neighborhood character. Downtown leads for conventions and car-free travel. North Loop offers restaurant-and-bar streets, while the separate Mill District end favors riverfront culture. Check your address: those two areas are not one continuous dining strip.

Where should families stay in Minneapolis?

North Loop & Mill District ranks first for families, with the Mill District end especially useful for river paths and Mill City Museum. Downtown Minneapolis is runner-up for city access. Mall of America & Airport comes next for indoor-attraction trips, ahead of Saint Paul overall; choose Saint Paul specifically for its Science Museum and Minnesota Children's Museum.

What is the cheapest good area to stay in Minneapolis?

Downtown Minneapolis is Axel's top budget pick, but not the area with the lowest typical rates. It balances hotel quality, access and value better for a general visit. University of Minnesota & Dinkytown is runner-up. Downtown Saint Paul and Roseville have lower typical rates, but cross-town journeys or car dependence can make them less practical for Minneapolis plans.

Where should I stay without a car, and can I get there from MSP?

Stay in Downtown Minneapolis without a car: the Blue Line runs directly from MSP, and Blue and Green Line trains serve 5th Street. North Loop & Mill District is runner-up, provided your lodging has a practical station walk. University trips require a Blue-to-Green transfer. For airport-area stays, verify the lodging connection rather than assuming every address is walkable from rail.

Is North Loop a good base for nightlife?

Yes—North Loop & Mill District leads the nightlife ranking, with North Loop itself the end to choose for restaurants and weekend bars. Downtown Minneapolis follows closely for First Avenue, theaters and established LGBTQ clubs. Visitors report lively North Loop bar and ballgame nights, so light sleepers should choose carefully. Mill District evenings focus more on theater and stadium events.

Where should I stay for the Minneapolis Convention Center?

Downtown Minneapolis is the first choice for conventions, ahead of North Loop & Mill District. Choose by the actual walk to the convention center rather than the downtown label alone. Convention-area lodging can be farther from rail stations. Skyways help in winter, but many close early or on weekends, so do not make them your only evening route.

Should I stay in Minneapolis or Saint Paul for a Twin Cities trip?

Stay in Minneapolis if most of your plans are there: Downtown ranks first overall, while North Loop & Mill District leads for first visits. Saint Paul is a separate city worth choosing for its museums, Lowertown and hockey or concerts at Grand Casino Arena. The Green Line connects the cities, but repeated cross-town trips are not a quick hop.
