Where to stay in Des Moines: the 5 best neighborhoods, ranked

Updated October 20, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank

Stay in Downtown & Court Avenue for a first visit, sightseeing or nightlife, choosing a street away from the bars if noise bothers you. East Village is the pick for food, independent shops and couples. Families heading to Adventureland should choose Altoona & Prairie Meadows, which also leads for budget stays; plan on having a car there.

Think of Des Moines as two walkable central bases surrounded by more car-dependent places to stay: Axel ranks each on how easily you can reach the sights, what is nearby, hotel quality, value for money and neighborhood character, with downtown the strongest all-round choice and the suburbs better for specific plans.

    Downtown & Court Avenue

historic bar district · office towers · skywalks · riverfront walks · Saturday market

    7.1/10

The practical first choice, provided you choose your street carefully.

The strongest hotel selection, convenient sightseeing and distinctive downtown setting earn first place, despite weaker value and late noise around Court Avenue.

Downtown mixes office towers and weather-protected skywalks with Court Avenue's brick-fronted bars. The Civic Center, Science Center and riverfront make it easy to combine sightseeing, a meeting and dinner without driving. Saturday mornings bring a different crowd when the farmers' market fills the Historic Court District from May through October.

Stay here for a first visit, a convention or a theater-and-baseball weekend. The catch is that downtown is not one consistent nighttime experience: Court Avenue runs louder and later than the surrounding business streets. Light sleepers should prioritize separation from the bar strip rather than assume every downtown address feels alike.

    Where to look

    East Village

independent boutiques · coffee stops · Capitol views · cocktail bars · LGBTQ+ nightlife

    6.6/10

Choose East Village for independent shops, good dinners and evenings on foot.

Independent shops, dining and character put East Village second, with nearly downtown-level access but fewer strong hotel options and similarly weak value.

East Fifth Street, East Locust and East Grand give you an easy neighborhood routine: independent shops, coffee, restaurants and bars between the river and the Capitol. This is our pick for a couples' weekend or a food-led visit, and the clearest LGBTQ+ base, with established gay bars concentrated around East Fifth and East Grand.

Choose it for neighborhood evenings rather than maximum office convenience. Crossing the river for conventions and western downtown adds walking, while the Capitol sits uphill. Nor does East Village automatically mean quiet: its own nightlife can run late. Local replies to visitor questions repeatedly recommend it alongside downtown for a walkable short stay.

    After dark
Restaurants, cocktail bars and LGBTQ+ venues sustain an evening scene; East Fifth is not a guaranteed quiet-night alternative to Court Avenue.
    Where to look
East Locust at Second Street. Stay near the river crossing for walking into western downtown while keeping East Village restaurants within reach.East Grand, Fourth to Fifth. Choose these blocks for shops, dinner and drinks close together; they suit evenings out more than a retreat from nightlife.

    Altoona & Prairie Meadows

theme-park weekends · casino evenings · seasonal horse racing · outlet shopping

    5.3/10

Best when theme parks, casino time or outlet shopping drive the trip.

Strong hotels and the best value lift Altoona to third, but poor access to central sights makes it a purpose-specific base.

Stay along Adventureland Drive when Adventureland or Prairie Meadows is the reason for the trip. This is an entertainment-and-shopping base: rides and water-park days in season, scheduled horse racing, casino evenings and the Outlets of Des Moines a short drive away. Families and adults on a casino break can use the same location for entirely different weekends.

It is not a substitute for downtown's street life. Our practical recommendation is to drive between destinations rather than build the trip around walking; check Adventureland's operating calendar before committing. If your priorities are the Capitol, art, independent restaurants or East Village nights out, repeated journeys into Des Moines outweigh the convenience of sleeping here.

    Where to look
Bass Pro Drive. Start here for outlet shopping and nearby food stops; this is a shopping-led base rather than a downtown-style walking neighborhood.Adventureland Drive at Prairie Meadows Drive. Choose this stretch for casino evenings and short attraction trips; plan crossings carefully rather than assuming an easy promenade.Adventureland Drive at 34th Avenue. Urbandale & Merle Hay

suburban corridors · mall entertainment · neighborhood parks · sports bars

    4.1/10

A sensible northwest-side stop for drivers, not a walkable city break.

Solid hotels and better value than downtown earn fourth, while dispersed destinations and weak sightseeing access limit its appeal beyond northwest-side trips.

Urbandale's commercial corridors suit a drive-in visit better than a sightseeing weekend. Around Douglas Avenue, 86th Street and Merle Hay Road, the routine is suburban restaurants, errands and drives between stops. Merle Hay Mall adds bowling, movies and indoor pickleball, while Urbandale's parks offer a break from the shopping strips.

Stay here when your plans are on the northwest side or you want less late-night bar activity. The trade-off is fragmented walking: a nearby restaurant does not necessarily make a pleasant evening promenade. Living History Farms is a separate drive west, not a doorstep attraction. Without a car, downtown is the stronger choice; local advice to an Urbandale visitor makes that trade-off explicit.

    Des Moines Airport

airport access · Fleur Drive · shuttle logistics · overnight stop

    4.1/10

Stay for the flight, not for the neighborhood.

Reasonable value and useful overnight hotels cannot offset limited neighborhood character, little nearby activity and inconvenient access to the city's main sights.

Choose the Fleur Drive airport strip for a late arrival, an early flight or a single stopover—not as your introduction to Des Moines. Its useful feature is terminal access and the availability of airport shuttles. The experience is functional rather than neighborhood-led, and confirming your transfer matters more here than assembling a walking itinerary.

For city outings, plan on arranging transport rather than relying on an airport bus. Confirm shuttle hours before booking, especially for dawn departures. Terminal construction is another reason to recheck pickup instructions. There is less bar-district activity to contend with, but airport proximity is not a promise of silence. For several nights of restaurants, culture or nightlife, choose downtown instead.

    After dark
Treat this as a transfer-and-sleep stop, not a strolling district; less nightlife does not eliminate traffic or aircraft noise.
    Where to look
Fleur Drive at Hackley Avenue. Choose the airport’s northern Fleur Drive approach for a flight-focused overnight; arrange transport rather than treating it as a sightseeing base.Fleur Drive at Army Post Road. Use this southern airport junction for a functional stopover; roads and terminal access shape the stay more than neighborhood wandering.

How Axel ranks neighborhoods

Axel ranks each neighborhood as a base for a visitor, not as a place to visit. Five scores out of 10 are blended into the score beside each name. The pages for each kind of trip weight how well a neighborhood fits that trip more heavily.

  • Getting around (20%): How many of the city’s most-visited sights are within easy reach, plus a direct train to the airport.
  • On your doorstep (15%): Places to eat, drink and see within a 10-minute walk, counted from OpenStreetMap.
  • Hotels (20%): Axel’s own reviews of the hotels here, and how many good ones there are to choose from.
  • Value (10%): Hotel quality for the money, from the rates Axel saw in the last 30 days, against the city as a whole.
  • Axel’s verdict (35%): How good a base it is for a visitor, from research into guides, forums, transit and local news.

Questions travelers ask

Is Downtown or East Village better for a first stay in Des Moines?

Downtown & Court Avenue is the better all-round first base, with the strongest hotel selection and convenient access to the Civic Center, Science Center and riverfront. East Village comes second overall but leads for independent shopping, food and couples' weekends. Choose downtown for a mixed itinerary, or East Village if neighborhood evenings matter more than the shortest walk to western offices.

Where should families stay in Des Moines?

Altoona & Prairie Meadows ranks first for families, especially when Adventureland is the main attraction. Check the park's operating calendar and plan on driving between destinations. Downtown & Court Avenue is runner-up and a better fit for a city-focused family trip built around the Science Center, riverfront and Principal Park; choose an address away from the late bar strip.

What is the cheapest good area to stay in Des Moines?

Altoona & Prairie Meadows is the strongest budget choice, with the lowest typical rates relative to the city median, the best value score and a good hotel selection. The airport area is runner-up for budget stays, followed by Urbandale & Merle Hay. For downtown-heavy plans, weigh those lower rates against the transport needed to reach sights, meals and evening activities.

Can I stay in Des Moines without a car, and how should I get from DSM?

Yes—choose Downtown & Court Avenue first or East Village second, then arrange a taxi or rideshare from DSM. Neither has airport rail. Downtown offers walkable sights and DART connections at Central Station; East Village supports shopping and dining on foot. For airport-area stays, confirm shuttle hours and pickup instructions rather than assuming a bus or round-the-clock transfer will work.

Is Court Avenue a good place to stay?

Yes, particularly for nightlife and a first visit, but distinguish the bar strip from the wider downtown area. Court Avenue runs late and loud, while surrounding business streets offer a different setting. Stay close if walking home from bars is the priority; choose some separation if crowd and traffic noise will disturb your sleep. Downtown remains the top overall base.

Where should I stay for a convention at the Iowa Events Center?

Downtown & Court Avenue is the first choice for Iowa Events Center conventions, combining central access, strong hotels and places to eat after meetings. Check the walk from your specific address and its distance from Court Avenue's bars. East Village is runner-up if independent dining appeals, but crossing the river adds walking for conventions and western downtown appointments.

Should I stay in Altoona for Adventureland or commute from downtown?

Stay in Altoona & Prairie Meadows when Adventureland is the main reason for the trip; it ranks first for families and offers strong hotel value. Check opening dates before committing, and use a car for trips between local destinations. Stay downtown instead when Adventureland is only one outing among several days of central sightseeing, culture and independent restaurants.
