Where to stay in Chennai for families: Mylapore & Alwarpet

Updated October 22, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank

Mylapore & Alwarpet leads for families because cultural outings, meals and quieter residential pockets can shape the stay. Nungambakkam is the runner-up for restaurant choice and adaptable evenings. In either area, the exact address matters more than the neighborhood label: check road conditions, station access and the immediate surroundings.

Mylapore gives you a distinctive Chennai morning: Kapaleeshwarar Temple, the Mada Streets, flower sellers and breakfast stops. Alwarpet adds a different rhythm, with quieter residential pockets and contemporary cafés and restaurants. Together they make the strongest choice for travelers who want neighborhood life and food to be part of the visit, rather than something reached by taxi.

Nungambakkam is the strongest general-purpose choice if restaurants, cafés and an easy evening plan matter as much as sightseeing. Khader Nawaz Khan Road and Wallace Garden give the neighborhood its social focus. The KNK Road pedestrian improvements opened in February 2026, making that particular stretch more comfortable on foot; don't assume the same walking conditions extend across the whole neighborhood.
