Axel's take on Anna Salai & Thousand Lights: #3 of 10 in Chennai, 6.1/10
Choose central convenience and direct airport Metro over neighborhood charm. Central journeys, direct airport Metro and a solid hotel showing outweigh traffic-heavy surroundings, limited doorstep attractions and weaker value.
Anna Salai, still commonly called Mount Road, is the practical answer when you want Chennai’s main transport spine rather than a self-contained sightseeing neighborhood. Thousand Lights Mosque provides a local landmark, Express Avenue is nearby, and the Blue Line makes airport journeys straightforward. A stay close to a station entrance is more useful than a broadly central address.
This is not my first choice for aimless wandering: the main road connects destinations better than it creates an enjoyable neighborhood walk. Check which side of Anna Salai your accommodation occupies and how you reach the station. Stay here for a short, transport-led visit; skip it if atmosphere outside the door is your main priority.
- Best for: travelers without a car, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want quiet streets; You prefer a walkable heritage neighborhood
- Getting around: Thousand Lights and LIC are Blue Line stops with direct MAA trains; Express Avenue is a local walk, while Chepauk is reached via Government Estate plus a walk or onward ride.
- After dark: Better for a planned indoor dinner or bar than an atmospheric late-night wander.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $91 a night
Where to stay in Chennai: every neighborhood ranked
Where to look in Anna Salai & Thousand Lights
- LIC Metro, Spencer Plaza side. Useful for airport rail and shopping; choose the Spencer Plaza exits to keep the station approach straightforward. Hotels here: Taj Connemara, Taj Club House.
- Whites Road, Express Avenue. A shopping-led base with indoor meals and browsing nearby; suits short visits more than atmospheric evening walks. Hotels here: E Hotel, K11 Express - Opp Express Avenue.
- Thousand Lights Metro, Greams Road exits. Prioritize these exits for Apollo-area appointments and airport trains rather than relying on a broadly central address. Hotels here: Grand One Tower, Zaith Residency, Chennai.
How to choose
- Choose Taj Connemara if heritage character and thoughtful service are part of the trip, not just a place to sleep.
- Choose E Hotel if direct Express Avenue access and vegetarian dining matter more than pool facilities.
- Choose K11 Express - Opp Express Avenue if you want the cheapest shopping base here and can accept basic rooms with uneven upkeep.
What paying more buys
Cheaper K11 Express supplies location and helpful staff; Taj Club House adds a rooftop pool, spa, gym and several dining venues. Taj Connemara costs more again for heritage character and particularly thoughtful service, not cutting-edge interiors. These upgrades are less worthwhile for a brief appointment trip with little hotel time. Typical rates with Axel here run from $18 a night at K11 Express - Opp Express Avenue to $126 at The Park Chennai (last 30 days).
