Axel's take: 8.0/10
Generous rooms and gardens make this a strong base, but expect dated finishes. a large, traditional upscale convention hotel near Shinagawa Station, scored for what it is.
Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa is a large, traditional upscale convention hotel: a strong pick for room space and rail connections rather than cutting-edge luxury. Every room has a balcony, and the shared Japanese garden gives it breathing room. Recent Expedia and Ikyu guests repeatedly praise the spacious rooms, cleanliness and helpful staff. We'd choose it for a comfortable Tokyo base with convenient access to Shinagawa's trains.
The trade-off is age: worn furnishings and dated bathrooms recur in reviews, so the five-star listing shouldn't set expectations of flawless luxury. The uphill walk from the station matters with luggage; the free shuttle leaves from Shinagawa Prince Hotel, not the station itself. Outdoor pools are summer-only and currently closed, while in-room dining is suspended. Skip it if modern interiors, a substantial gym or full-service luxury are priorities.
