Axel's take: 8.9/10

Come for the skyline views, stay for the rooms and thoughtful service. a design-led five-star luxury hotel on the North Bund, scored for what it is.

W Shanghai is a design-led five-star on the North Bund, and we'd pick it for skyline views and a lively alternative to traditional luxury. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and recent Trip.com guests repeatedly praise the spacious rooms, helpful staff and river panoramas; cleanliness is another strong point. The indoor pool, seasonal outdoor pool, gym and spa give it substance beyond the bold interiors. Book a specifically named Bund- or Pearl Tower-view category rather than assuming every room delivers the famous outlook.

The trade-offs are location and polish: this is the North Bund, not the historic Bund's central stretch. Recent guests occasionally flag maintenance niggles and service stretched at busy times, though praise comfortably outweighs complaints. Check outdoor-pool hours before planning evening swims. We'd skip it for restrained, traditional luxury or sightseeing centered on the historic Bund.

• Best for: couples booking a skyline-view room; travelers who enjoy bold design and lively bars; families wanting pools and spacious rooms

• Watch out for: North Bund rather than the central historic Bund; outdoor pool is seasonal, with restricted hours; occasional maintenance and peak-time service lapses

• Location: North Bund waterfront setting, with nearby mall dining; distinguish it from the historic Bund.

• Rooms: Spacious, boldly styled rooms; view categories matter, and occasional maintenance issues surface.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong guest feedback, supported by high cleanliness ratings across major sites.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are a recurring strength; busy periods can expose inconsistencies.

• Amenities: Indoor and seasonal outdoor pools, gym, AWAY Spa, restaurants and lively bars.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is complimentary; breakfast depends on the package, and the official site now allows pets with accommodation and cleaning fees.
