Axel's take: 8.9/10

Polished service and a superb Xintiandi location outweigh interiors showing their age. a full-service 5-star luxury hotel in walkable Xintiandi, scored for what it is.

The Langham is a full-service five-star in Xintiandi, and a strong pick if you want Shanghai’s restaurants, shopping and metro close at hand. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise attentive staff, thorough housekeeping and spacious, comfortable rooms. Entry-level rooms start at 40 square metres, while the indoor pool, Chuan Spa and 24-hour gym give it substance beyond the address. We’d choose it for an easy, well-supported city stay.

The reservation is freshness rather than comfort: some recent Expedia and Trip.com guests say the interiors are showing their age. That matters at this level, even though positive reports overwhelmingly outnumber complaints. Breakfast and club access depend on your booking, so check inclusions. Skip it if brand-new design or a Bund waterfront setting matters more than walkable dining and dependable hospitality.

• Best for: first-time Shanghai visitors; couples exploring restaurants and shops; business travelers wanting a walkable base

• Watch out for: some interiors showing their age; breakfast and club access not always included; not a Bund waterfront hotel

• Location: Across from Xintiandi’s dining and shopping, with Huaihai Road and metro access nearby.

• Rooms: Entry-level rooms start at 40 square metres; comfort earns stronger praise than freshness.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong housekeeping feedback across recent guest reviews.

• Service: Helpful staff and attentive concierge service are recurring strengths.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, Chuan Spa, 24-hour gym, restaurants and a club lounge.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast and lounge inclusions; extra beds and late checkout can cost extra.
