Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong family base for apartment space and convenience, rather than full-service hotel glamour. An upscale serviced-apartment hotel in Shanghai’s Lujiazui financial district, scored for what it is.

IFC Residence is an upscale serviced-apartment hotel in Lujiazui, and we’d pick it for space and everyday practicality over five-star hotel theatre. Studios start at 71 square metres, with kitchens and in-room laundry making longer stays easier. Recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, helpful staff and direct IFC Mall connection. The indoor pool and easy access to metro lines 2 and 14 strengthen an already convenient family base.

The trade-off is that some furnishings and kitchen equipment are showing their age, a complaint appearing across several sites. Changing elevators at the third-floor lobby also makes coming and going less straightforward. Breakfast gets mixed verdicts, so we wouldn’t automatically add it. Skip it if you want freshly updated interiors, a lively hotel bar or a more traditional full-service luxury stay.

• Best for: Families needing apartment space; Longer stays with cooking and laundry; Business travelers working in Lujiazui

• Watch out for: Some dated furnishings and equipment; Elevator change at the third-floor lobby; Mixed breakfast feedback

• Location: Direct IFC Mall connection and access to Lujiazui metro lines 2 and 14.

• Rooms: Generous apartments with kitchens and laundry; some guests report aging furniture and equipment.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent guest feedback across several sites.

• Service: Helpful reception and housekeeping earn repeated praise, though occasional slow-service complaints remain.

• Amenities: 25-metre heated indoor pool, gym, sauna, steam room, terrace and indoor children’s play area.

• Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra; check breakfast inclusion rather than assuming it comes with the apartment.
