Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong central base with generous rooms, helpful staff and old-fashioned polish. a traditional five-star city hotel beside Nanjing Road, scored for what it is.

Grand Central is a traditional five-star city hotel whose strongest selling points are space and location. We'd choose it for a first Shanghai visit: Nanjing Road is practically outside, East Nanjing Road metro is nearby, and the Bund is walkable. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, spacious rooms and helpful staff, especially the concierge team. The indoor pool and well-liked breakfast round out a comfortable sightseeing base.

The trade-off is age rather than a widespread failure of the basics. Expect ornate, brown-and-gold interiors rather than contemporary luxury; some recent guests mention dated fittings. Booking.com's weak Wi-Fi rating is worth noting if you need dependable connectivity, and gym enthusiasts may find the equipment limited. We'd skip it for cutting-edge design, but it's a strong pick for classic comfort in a very convenient location.

• Best for: first-time Shanghai visitors; shoppers and metro-based sightseers; travelers who prefer spacious, traditional rooms

• Watch out for: dated décor and some aging fittings; weak guest ratings for Wi-Fi; limited gym equipment

• Location: Beside Nanjing Road, near East Nanjing Road metro, with the Bund within walking distance.

• Rooms: Guests consistently praise generous space and comfortable beds; the styling is distinctly traditional.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across recent reviews, with Booking.com cleanliness rated 9.1/10.

• Service: Recent feedback strongly favors helpful reception, housekeeping and concierge staff.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, gym, sauna and restaurants; breakfast is well reviewed, but gym equipment draws some criticism.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast costs extra unless included; parking is charged, and an incidental deposit may be required.
