Conrad Shanghai is a large 5-star high-rise whose strongest luxury is its location: Nanjing Road shopping, restaurants and People’s Square are close at hand. It’s a strong pick for first-time visitors who want convenience and skyline views. Booking.com and Expedia guests broadly praise cleanliness, comfortable rooms and helpful staff; breakfast variety, the indoor pool and gym are other dependable draws.

The trade-off is polish.
