Axel's take: 7.8/10

A strong sightseeing base, with welcoming staff but uneven rooms and amenity caveats. an independent 4-star hotel in Savannah’s Historic District, scored for what it is.

The DeSoto is an independent 4-star hotel overlooking Madison Square, and we'd choose it for exploring Savannah on foot rather than expecting flawless luxury. Its art-filled public spaces have character, while Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the location and friendly staff, particularly the valet team. Comfortable rooms and upper-floor views earn plenty of positive mentions, too.

The trade-off is consistency: room wear, maintenance issues and noise recur in reviews, although the overall guest picture remains positive. Valet parking is expensive, and Expedia lists a destination fee. More importantly, August 2026 guests on multiple sites reported the rooftop pool closed for renovations; an Expedia guest also reported the gym closed. The official site advertises both, but reopening wasn't independently confirmed. Check directly before booking if either matters. We'd skip it for a pool-focused break or reliably polished luxury.

• Best for: first-time Savannah sightseers; couples exploring on foot; SCAD visitors

• Watch out for: confirm pool and gym reopening; uneven room condition and noise; valet charges and destination fee

• Location: Overlooks Madison Square, with historic sights, restaurants and Forsyth Park within walking distance.

• Rooms: Comfort and skyline views draw praise; dated finishes, maintenance and noise are recurring drawbacks.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive feedback, with some housekeeping and dusty-room complaints rather than a dominant cleanliness problem.

• Service: Friendly staff, especially valets, are a consistent strength; problem handling is less dependable.

• Amenities: Dining, café, rooftop pool and gym are advertised; August 2026 pool and gym closures warrant direct confirmation.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a destination fee; valet parking, breakfast and dogs cost extra. This is no longer a Hilton.
