Axel's take: 8.1/10

A stylish downtown base with standout pools, offset by fees and uneven housekeeping. a design-forward 4-star boutique hotel in downtown Sarasota, scored for what it is.

The Sarasota Modern is a design-forward 4-star boutique hotel in the Rosemary District, better suited to downtown exploring than a beach-first vacation. It's a strong pick for travelers who want neighborhood restaurants and poolside downtime. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests praise the generous rooms, welcoming staff and pool deck; the swimming pool, hot tub and cold plunge give it more character than a standard city hotel.

The polish isn't entirely consistent. Recent reviews mention some worn furnishings and housekeeping misses, although overall cleanliness ratings remain strong. A daily destination fee and paid valet-only parking also dent the value. We'd choose it for a sociable Sarasota weekend, but skip it if direct beach access or reliably meticulous service matters more than design and atmosphere.

• Best for: couples mixing downtown exploring with pool time; design-minded weekend travelers; performing-arts visitors

• Watch out for: daily destination fee and valet-only parking; occasional housekeeping misses and worn furnishings; not a beachfront hotel

• Location: Walkable Rosemary District base near restaurants and performing arts; beaches require a ride.

• Rooms: Guests often praise spacious layouts, though some furnishings show wear.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall ratings, tempered by several recent reports of missed or inadequate cleaning.

• Service: Friendly front-desk, bar and valet staff earn repeated praise; follow-through is less consistent.

• Amenities: Swimming pool, hot tub, cold plunge, Wink Wink dining and a 24-hour gym.

• Fees and surprises: Daily destination fee, paid valet with no on-site self-parking, and a separate pet fee.
