Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong upscale pick for clean, comfortable rooms and stadium views, with some pricey extras. An upscale high-rise business hotel opposite the National Stadium, scored for what it is.

Hilton San Jose La Sabana is an upscale high-rise business hotel opposite the National Stadium and La Sabana Park. It’s a strong pick for modern comfort: recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean, spacious rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. The city, mountain and stadium views give it a genuine edge, while the 31st-floor indoor pool and gym make it more than somewhere to sleep between meetings.

The trade-offs are mostly convenience and extras. Downtown’s main cultural sights are roughly four kilometers away, so this isn’t our first choice for sightseeing on foot. Restaurant service draws some criticism, including waits when busy, and guests flag expensive drinks and uneven dining value. Hilton lists parking and buffet breakfast as chargeable. Choose it for business, stadium events or a comfortable city stop; skip it if you want downtown on your doorstep.

• Best for: Business travelers; Stadium eventgoers; Travelers wanting modern comfort and views

• Watch out for: Outside the historic downtown core; Restaurant waits and uneven service; Chargeable parking and breakfast

• Location: Opposite the stadium and La Sabana Park; downtown cultural sights are roughly four kilometers away.

• Rooms: Modern, spacious and comfortable according to guests, with city, mountain or stadium views.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest reviews and Booking.com’s category ratings.

• Service: Staff receive frequent praise, though restaurant service is less consistent.

• Amenities: 31st-floor indoor pool and gym, The Cloud restaurant, free Wi-Fi and an executive lounge.

• Fees and surprises: Hilton lists paid parking and buffet breakfast; no airport shuttle is provided.
