Axel's take: 8.3/10

Spacious, friendly and practical, but train noise is the catch a simple 3-star apartment hotel in San Pedro, scored for what it is.

Apartotel Tairona is a simple 3-star apartment hotel that earns its keep through space, helpful staff and useful kitchenettes rather than stylish interiors. It's a strong pick for university visits or a practical San Pedro base, with the mall nearby. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the roomy accommodation, cleanliness and breakfast; the hotel's own site confirms included breakfast and indoor parking.

The main compromise is noise: trains and traffic feature repeatedly in reviews, and guests report no air-conditioning, making open windows a less comfortable solution. Recent Expedia feedback also describes dated furnishings and worn floors, though the overall cleanliness picture remains positive. We'd choose it for space and good value, but skip it if quiet mornings, modern finishes or air-conditioning are priorities.

• Best for: University of Costa Rica visitors; Families wanting kitchen facilities; Value-minded longer stays

• Watch out for: Train and traffic noise; No air-conditioning; Dated interiors and tight parking

• Location: Convenient for San Pedro Mall and the University of Costa Rica, rather than downtown sightseeing on foot.

• Rooms: Spacious apartments with kitchenettes; recent guests describe dated finishes and no air-conditioning.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback, despite an isolated complaint about dirty carpeting.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent strengths across sites.

• Amenities: Included breakfast, Wi-Fi, indoor parking, laundry facilities and an elevator are listed by the hotel.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is included but reportedly cramped; Expedia lists fees for early check-in and late checkout.
