Axel's take: 7.2/10

A practical Portsmouth base with friendly staff, but dated rooms and no dependable pool. a no-frills budget hotel in Portsmouth, near Olde Towne, scored for what it is.

This is a no-frills budget hotel in Portsmouth, not Norfolk proper, and we'd consider it for a short, practical stay. Recent Expedia guests and Booking.com reviews reproduced by Planet of Hotels repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and access to Olde Towne restaurants. Free parking, breakfast and Wi-Fi make it good value, while microwaves, refrigerators and selected rooms with kitchens add everyday convenience.

The trade-off is uneven upkeep rather than a reliably polished stay. Many guests report clean rooms, but recurring comments mention musty smells, worn bathrooms and housekeeping misses. Breakfast gets both enthusiastic praise and complaints about limited choices or replenishment. Most importantly, several June 2026 guests reported the outdoor pool closed, and Choice no longer advertises it. We'd skip this if swimming or consistently fresh room condition matters more than location and useful basics.

• Best for: budget-minded short stays; visitors to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth; travelers wanting kitchen-equipped rooms

• Watch out for: Outdoor pool reported closed; do not count on swimming; Dated bathrooms and uneven housekeeping; Breakfast selection and replenishment vary

• Location: In Portsmouth near Olde Towne restaurants and museums; not downtown Norfolk.

• Rooms: Comfortable but dated; microwaves and refrigerators are standard, with kitchens in selected rooms.

• Cleanliness: Many recent guests praise cleanliness, but odors and housekeeping misses recur.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent strength across recent reviews.

• Amenities: Free breakfast and Wi-Fi; multiple summer 2026 reviews report the outdoor pool closed.

• Fees and surprises: Self-parking is free; an incidental deposit may be required, and pets are not accepted except service animals.
