Axel's take: 8.1/10

A strong downtown base with helpful staff, but rooms could use a refresh. A full-service downtown convention hotel near the waterfront, scored for what it is.

Norfolk Waterside Marriott is a full-service downtown convention hotel: a strong pick for walkable sightseeing, business events or a night before a cruise. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful front-desk and valet teams, while clean, comfortable rooms and river views earn plenty of positive mentions. Waterside District, Nauticus and the cruise terminal are within easy walking distance.

The trade-off is condition rather than convenience. Recent reviews on both sites describe tired décor and maintenance shortcomings, although the overall feedback remains positive. Parking and breakfast cost extra, and self-parking means using a city garage. Marriott still lists an indoor pool, but a June 2026 guest reported a maintenance closure; confirm availability if swimming matters. We'd skip it if fresh interiors and polished facilities are your priority.

• Best for: Convention and business travelers; Pre-cruise overnight stays; Walkable downtown sightseeing

• Watch out for: Dated décor and uneven maintenance; Paid parking in a city garage or through valet; Confirm indoor pool availability

• Location: Walkable to Waterside District, Nauticus and the cruise terminal.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and appealing river-view options; recurring calls for a refresh.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised, with some reports of dusty common areas and worn carpets.

• Service: Front-desk and valet staff attract repeated praise across guest-review sites.

• Amenities: Restaurants, café, gym and advertised indoor pool; a June 2026 pool closure was reported.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and parking generally cost extra; Marriott lists free Wi-Fi for members booking direct.
