Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong downtown pick for river views and dining, less suited to quiet getaways. An upscale 4-star downtown conference hotel with river views and lively dining, scored for what it is.

Hilton Norfolk The Main is an upscale 4-star conference hotel that earns its keep through location, comfortable rooms and unusually good dining options. It's a strong pick for exploring the waterfront on foot or staying before a cruise. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, river views and welcoming staff. Saltine, Varia and rooftop beer garden Grain give the place more personality than a standard business Hilton, while an indoor pool and 24-hour gym cover the practical basics.

The trade-off is a lively atmosphere rather than a quiet retreat. Grain's entertainment can be loud, and some guests report noise reaching rooms. Service is generally well regarded, but follow-through on requests is less consistent. Parking and standard breakfast cost extra. We'd choose it for a downtown weekend or conference, but look elsewhere if dependable quiet is your priority.

• Best for: Downtown weekends with dining and nightlife; Conference travelers; Pre-cruise stays

• Watch out for: Noise from Grain and live entertainment; Occasional service follow-through lapses; Paid parking and breakfast

• Location: Walkable downtown base near Waterside, Nauticus and the cruise terminal.

• Rooms: Comfortable rooms with praised river views; request a location away from entertainment noise.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall guest feedback, including recent Expedia stays, despite occasional lapses.

• Service: Friendly staff draw frequent praise, though handling requests and problems can be inconsistent.

• Amenities: Three dining venues, rooftop beer garden, indoor pool, 24-hour gym and extensive meeting space.

• Fees and surprises: Self-parking and valet are charged; standard breakfast is extra, and pets are not allowed.
