Axel's take: 5.2/10

Handy for the beach, but cleanliness and upkeep make this a gamble. a bare-bones 2-star motel across the road from the beach, scored for what it is.

Budget Inn Norfolk is a bare-bones 2-star motel whose strongest asset is its location: the beach and Ocean View Fishing Pier are just across the road. We'd consider it only for a no-frills stopover with low expectations. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests frequently praise welcoming staff, and rooms have useful basics such as refrigerators and microwaves. Some recent visitors report clean, perfectly adequate accommodation.

The inconsistency is the problem. Alongside those positive stays, 2026 reviews describe dirty rooms, worn linens, missing towels, maintenance failures and recurring cockroach sightings. Traffic noise is another drawback, and the beach approach involves a busy road. Booking.com's weak overall rating reinforces the caution. We'd skip it for a family beach vacation or whenever dependable cleanliness matters more than proximity to the sand.

• Best for: undemanding overnight stopovers; travelers prioritizing beach and pier access

• Watch out for: inconsistent cleaning and recurring pest reports; worn rooms and unreliable supplies; traffic noise and a busy road to the beach

• Location: Short walk to the beach and fishing pier, across a busy road.

• Rooms: Basic rooms with fridges and microwaves; condition and maintenance vary.

• Cleanliness: Some guests report clean rooms, but recent dirt, linen and cockroach complaints recur.

• Service: Friendly staff earn repeated praise; problem handling is less consistent.

• Amenities: Free parking and a staffed 24-hour front desk; little beyond the basics.

• Fees and surprises: A nightly destination fee is listed; Expedia charges for Wi-Fi while Booking.com lists it free—confirm.
