Wow, what a pit. Very dingy rooms. Filthy carpet. Poorly trained front desk staff. Rooms are large, but this is a really impressive hotel.

The Lex is a small, no-frills 3-star whose strongest assets are its location and staff, not its interiors. It's a good fit for travelers spending their days out: Madison Square Park, neighborhood restaurants and the Lexington Avenue subway are close, and the Empire State Building is 16 minutes on foot. Tripadvisor and Travelocity guests repeatedly praise helpful service and clean rooms. Continental breakfast, continuous coffee and tea, and a rooftop terrace add useful extras.
The compromises are compact rooms, basic breakfast and uneven room condition. - Getting around: Use the 6 train from 23rd or 28th Street for east-side journeys, with transfers for destinations farther west. Grand Central is 10 minutes by transit; Times Square is 16.
