Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong hostel pick for clean rooms, helpful staff and meeting other travelers. A large, social hostel with private rooms and apartments near Berri-UQAM, scored for what it is.

M Montreal is a large, social hostel, not a conventional two-star hotel—and it delivers very well in that frame. Tripadvisor, Expedia and Hostelworld guests consistently praise cleanliness and helpful staff, with recent reviews backing up that reputation. Dorm bunks have privacy curtains, lights and charging points; private rooms and apartments offer alternatives to sharing. The rooftop hot tubs, downstairs bar and organized activities make it a strong pick for solo travelers who want company, while nearby Berri-UQAM makes exploring straightforward.

The trade-off is bustle rather than boutique calm: recent Hostelworld guests mention occasional noise, and the immediate streets won't suit everyone after dark. Breakfast and parking cost extra, and Expedia lists a service fee and damage deposit. We'd choose it for a sociable city break, but skip it if silence and a polished neighborhood are priorities.

• Best for: Solo travelers looking to socialize; Budget-minded city explorers; Friends wanting private rooms with hostel atmosphere

• Watch out for: Occasional noise and busy shared spaces; Immediate streets can feel uncomfortable after dark; Extra charges beyond the room or bed

• Location: Convenient for Berri-UQAM and Sainte-Catherine; some guests find the immediate area rough-edged.

• Rooms: Curtained dorm bunks plus private rooms and apartments; check the exact room and bathroom configuration.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest reviews and major booking-site category scores.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff attract repeated praise; reception is staffed around the clock.

• Amenities: Rooftop hot tubs, bar, social activities, shared kitchen and a 24-hour work lounge.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and limited parking cost extra; Expedia also lists a service fee and damage deposit.
