Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong small-hotel choice for warm service and Victorian character, provided stairs aren't a problem. a characterful, budget-friendly 3-star Victorian inn, scored for what it is.

Manoir Sherbrooke is a budget-friendly 3-star Victorian inn that earns its appeal through personal service rather than fancy facilities. We'd pick it for a characterful Montreal city break: Tripadvisor, Expedia and Hotels.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and the included continental breakfast. Its position between the Plateau and Latin Quarter works well for exploring restaurants, downtown sights and nearby metro connections on foot.

The trade-offs come with the old building. There's no elevator, and the hotel explicitly says it isn't accessible. Rooms differ in size and condition; some guests find them cramped or dated, and street-facing rooms can be noisy. Ask for a rear room if quiet matters, and expect to arrange paid parking elsewhere. We'd skip it for step-free access or sleek, standardized rooms, but it's a strong pick for travelers who prefer personality to chain-hotel predictability.

• Best for: couples who like historic inns; car-free city explorers; value-minded independent travelers

• Watch out for: stairs and no elevator; street-facing noise and variable room sizes; no on-site parking

• Location: Walkable base between the Plateau and Latin Quarter, with restaurants and metro stations nearby.

• Rooms: Individually decorated Victorian-style rooms; size, upkeep and street exposure vary.

• Cleanliness: Strong praise across recent reviews, outweighing occasional maintenance and linen complaints.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent strength across review sites.

• Amenities: Continental breakfast, Wi-Fi, communal coffee and tea, terrace and 24-hour reception.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast is included; public parking costs extra, and the historic building is not accessible.
