Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong Old Montreal pick for personal service and character, with a modest breakfast. A small, historic 4-star boutique hotel in Old Montreal, scored for what it is.

Hotel Bonaparte is a historic 4-star boutique hotel that gets the important things right: a walkable Old Montreal location, consistently clean rooms and genuinely attentive service. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful reception team and proximity to Notre-Dame Basilica, restaurants and the waterfront. It’s a strong pick for couples who prefer a small, characterful hotel to a large full-service property. The French restaurant downstairs adds another reason to stay.

The main caveat is breakfast: the included continental basket delivered to your door delights some guests but repeatedly disappoints others for its small portions and limited choice. Room sizes vary, and balconies or terraces require the right category. Parking nearby costs extra. We’d skip it if a substantial cooked breakfast or spacious standard room is central to your plans.

• Best for: Couples on a city break; Exploring Old Montreal on foot; Travelers who value personal service

• Watch out for: Light continental breakfast with limited choice; Room sizes vary by category; Paid parking nearby

• Location: Excellent walking base near Notre-Dame Basilica, Old Port attractions and restaurants.

• Rooms: Historic character and generally comfortable beds; book a specific category for more space or outdoor seating.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, with exceptionally strong Expedia cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Warm, helpful reception staff earn repeated praise across Tripadvisor and Expedia.

• Amenities: French restaurant, bar, free Wi-Fi and included continental breakfast; terraces and balconies in selected rooms.

• Fees and surprises: Nearby parking is extra; the included breakfast is a light basket, not a cooked buffet.
