Axel's take: 9.1/10

A strong Old Montreal pick for character, comfort and genuinely attentive service. a historic 4-star boutique hotel on Old Montreal’s waterfront, scored for what it is.

Auberge du Vieux-Port is a historic 4-star boutique hotel whose waterfront setting and personal service make it a strong choice for exploring Old Montreal. Exposed stone, wooden beams and comfortable bedding give its 45 rooms character without sacrificing comfort. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, helpful staff and walkable location. We'd choose it for a romantic city break rather than a full-service resort experience.

The trade-offs come with the old building: some rooms are narrow, steps can remain beyond the elevator, and guests report street noise on lively nights. Confirm your room’s layout if mobility or quiet matters. The gym is off-site, breakfast and valet parking cost extra, and the hotel currently lists Terrasse sur l’Auberge as closed until next summer. We'd skip it if step-free access, extensive on-site wellness facilities or dependable silence are priorities.

• Best for: couples on a city break; Old Montreal sightseeing on foot; travelers who prefer historic character

• Watch out for: street noise on lively nights; steps and variable room layouts; rooftop terrace currently closed

• Location: Waterfront position with Old Montreal’s restaurants, sights and shops within easy walking distance.

• Rooms: Characterful stone-and-beam rooms with well-liked beds; some are narrow or require extra steps.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong praise across recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are a recurring standout, including concierge and valet assistance.

• Amenities: Two restaurants, fireplace lounge and free Wi-Fi; gym access is off-site and the rooftop terrace is currently closed.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and valet parking are extra unless included; oversized vehicles incur additional parking fees.
