#8 of 9 hotels in East Town & Lakefront by Axel's take. East Town & Lakefront is #1 of 5 places to stay in Milwaukee. The best hotels in East Town & Lakefront, ranked · Where to stay in Milwaukee

Axel's take: 8.4/10

A characterful lakefront base with useful kitchens, friendly staff and some old-building quirks. A historic 3-star condo hotel near Milwaukee’s lakefront, scored for what it is.

The Knickerbocker is a historic 3-star condo hotel, not a slick modern boutique property—and it’s a strong pick if you want character and kitchen facilities near Milwaukee’s lakefront. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and walkable setting near Juneau Park and the Art Museum. Individually designed suites make it especially appealing for longer visits, while the restaurant, spa and gym add useful conveniences.

The trade-off is consistency: room layouts and furnishings vary, some interiors feel dated, and several guests mention noisy or awkward-to-regulate window air conditioners. Confirm your exact room configuration rather than relying on generic photos. Parking costs extra and is first-come, first-served; unusually, the hotel says Hyundai and Kia vehicles are not permitted. We’d skip it if uniform contemporary rooms matter more than historic atmosphere.

  • Best for: Lakefront walks and museum visits; Longer stays with kitchen facilities; Travelers who enjoy historic hotels

  • Watch out for: Variable room layouts and dated furnishings; Window air-conditioning noise; Paid, limited parking; Hyundai and Kia vehicles prohibited

  • Location: Walkable lakefront neighborhood near Juneau Park, the Art Museum and downtown.

  • Rooms: Individually designed rooms and suites; confirm kitchen facilities, bedding and layout before booking.

  • Cleanliness: Generally a strength, with positive recent feedback across Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com.

  • Service: Helpful, welcoming front-desk staff earn consistent praise across review sites.

  • Amenities: On-site restaurant and bar, salon and spa, fitness center and free Wi-Fi.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking is charged and not guaranteed; Hyundai and Kia vehicles are prohibited, and an incidental card hold may apply.
