#5 of 9 hotels in CBD by Axel's take. CBD is #1 of 9 places to stay in Melbourne. The best hotels in CBD, ranked · Where to stay in Melbourne

Axel's take: 7.7/10

Choose it for heritage and location, not flawless five-star polish. a historic five-star hotel in Melbourne’s theatre district, scored for what it is.

The Windsor is a historic five-star hotel whose strongest assets are its Victorian character and Spring Street location. We'd choose it for a theatre weekend or a city break where atmosphere matters more than contemporary luxury. Parliament Station is outside, and the Princess Theatre is nearby. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise comfortable beds, spacious rooms and helpful staff; afternoon tea adds to the appeal.

The compromise is condition and consistency. Tripadvisor and Trip.com guests describe worn furnishings and uneven housekeeping, while plumbing complaints also appear on Expedia. These aren't universal experiences—overall cleanliness ratings remain strong—but they matter at five-star level. Breakfast and valet parking cost extra unless included. We'd skip it if pristine interiors, modern bathrooms and reliably polished service are essential.

Best for: heritage-hotel enthusiasts; theatre weekends; car-free city breaks
Watch out for: worn furnishings and dated bathrooms; uneven service and housekeeping reports; breakfast and valet parking extras
Location: Opposite Parliament House, with Parliament Station outside and theatres within easy walking distance.
Rooms: Comfortable beds and generous higher-category rooms; furnishings show wear, and many bathrooms have showers over baths.
Cleanliness: Strong overall ratings, tempered by recurring reports of grubby curtains, carpets and housekeeping lapses.
Service: Recent Expedia feedback is largely warm; Tripadvisor reports more uneven reception and problem handling.
Amenities: Afternoon tea, One Eleven breakfast, Cricketers Bar, room service and free Wi-Fi.
Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusions; valet parking uses a shared public car park and carries an additional charge.
