#4 of 4 hotels in Carlton by Axel's take. Carlton is #4 of 9 places to stay in Melbourne. The best hotels in Carlton, ranked · Where to stay in Melbourne

Axel's take: 7.3/10

A practical Carlton base, but renovations and street noise warrant caution. a simple 3-star lodge with apartment-style rooms on Lygon Street, scored for what it is.

Carlton Lygon Lodge is a simple 3-star with apartment-style rooms, best chosen for its restaurant-lined location rather than polished interiors. We'd consider it for a practical Carlton stay: Melbourne University and the museum are nearby, and kitchenettes in some rooms add useful flexibility. Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms and helpful staff, although Booking.com and Tripadvisor present a more mixed picture.

The main catch is extensive renovation work affecting the exterior, reception and selected rooms. Expedia lists completion in February 2028; Booking.com warns of daytime disturbance through late 2028, so confirm the current scope before booking. Recent Tripadvisor guests also describe intrusive street and music noise, while others found side-facing rooms quiet. We'd skip it for guaranteed peace or a polished stay; parking is limited and cannot be reserved.

  • Best for: Budget-conscious Carlton visitors; University of Melbourne visitors; Travelers wanting kitchenette options

  • Watch out for: Extensive renovations continuing into 2028; Street and music noise in exposed rooms; Limited, unreservable parking

  • Location: Strong for Lygon Street dining, Melbourne University and the museum; central Melbourne is walkable.

  • Rooms: Basic, sometimes tired interiors; kitchenette availability varies, and side-facing rooms may be quieter.

  • Cleanliness: Mostly praised on Expedia, but Booking.com's lower cleanliness rating and some Tripadvisor reports suggest unevenness.

  • Service: Helpful staff are a frequent positive, though some recent guests describe indifferent responses.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, 24-hour reception, guest laundry and selected kitchenettes cover the practical basics.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking may cost extra and is not guaranteed; card surcharge and refundable damage deposit apply. Renovation end dates differ across sites.
