#5 of 7 hotels in Fitzroy & Collingwood by Axel's take. Fitzroy & Collingwood is #2 of 9 places to stay in Melbourne. The best hotels in Fitzroy & Collingwood, ranked · Where to stay in Melbourne

Axel's take: 7.4/10

A practical Fitzroy budget base, provided you can sleep through the noise. Budget pub accommodation with private rooms and shared bathrooms in Fitzroy, scored for what it is.

Royal Derby is budget pub accommodation with a hostel-style setup: private single and double rooms, shared bathrooms and a communal kitchenette. It’s a good fit for travelers who want Brunswick Street’s cafés, bars and shops rather than hotel comforts. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests praise the convenient location, clean rooms and helpful staff; Booking.com’s overall feedback is good rather than outstanding. We’d consider it for a simple, short stay in Fitzroy.

Noise is the main compromise, not a footnote. Guests describe sound from the pub downstairs, traffic and trams, and the hotel’s Airbnb listing explicitly warns about evening noise. Rooms are sparsely furnished, and access involves two flights of stairs without a lift. Shared facilities help keep things economical, but we’d skip it for light sleepers, anyone with mobility difficulties or travelers expecting an ensuite bathroom.

  • Best for: Solo travelers on a budget; Fitzroy café and nightlife trips; Short stays with modest expectations

  • Watch out for: Pub, traffic and tram noise; Shared bathrooms; Two flights of stairs; no lift

  • Location: Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, close to cafés, shops, restaurants and tram connections.

  • Rooms: Private single and double rooms with basic furnishings; bathrooms are shared.

  • Cleanliness: Generally praised by recent guests, though cleanliness does not mean polished or newly finished facilities.

  • Service: Guests often praise friendly, helpful staff and straightforward check-in.

  • Amenities: Shared kitchenette, laundry and free Wi-Fi, plus a downstairs pub, restaurant and beer garden.

  • Fees and surprises: Expedia lists no on-site parking, contrary to the catalog; arrange arrival details ahead.
