Axel's take on Fitzroy & Collingwood: #2 of 9 in Melbourne, 7.9/10
Stay here for Melbourne's restaurants, independent shops and nights that run late. Fitzroy & Collingwood combines strong character, good hotels and worthwhile value, trading some sightseeing convenience for neighborhood dining and nightlife.
Brunswick, Gertrude, Smith and Johnston streets make Fitzroy and Collingwood an excellent base for eating, browsing and going out. Expect independent clothing shops, small galleries, converted industrial buildings, corner pubs and serious restaurants mixed into ordinary residential streets. The appeal is spending time in the neighborhood, not merely returning after sightseeing elsewhere.
This is our strongest choice for food-led repeat visits and late evenings, including queer nightlife around Smith Street. The trade-offs are weekend noise near venues and tram dependence for many cross-city journeys. Fitzroy has no railway station, and Collingwood station is over in Abbotsford. Light sleepers should choose a side street, not the busiest strip.
- Best for: food lovers, nightlife, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You need silence on weekend nights; You want major sights immediately outside
- Getting around: Use tram 11 on Brunswick Street, 86 on Gertrude/Smith, or 96 on Nicholson; walk between the dining strips. MEL/AVV: SkyBus to Southern Cross, then tram, with a transfer where needed.
- After dark: Smith and Brunswick streets stay active late, with weekend bar crowds and music noise around venues.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $142 a night · usually 7% under the public rate
