Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong neighborhood base if you value location over room size. A compact, design-led 4-star co-living hotel in Collingwood, scored for what it is.

lyf Collingwood is a design-led 4-star co-living hotel, not a conventional full-service stay. It's a strong pick for exploring Smith Street's restaurants, cafés and shops, with trams nearby for the city center. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness, comfortable beds and helpful staff. The shared kitchen, courtyard and workspaces make the communal areas genuinely useful rather than just decorative.

The main compromise is space: entry-level rooms measure just 13 square meters, and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly describe tight layouts and limited storage. We'd choose a larger category for two people with luggage. Cooking facilities are communal rather than standard in-room kitchens, and parking costs extra with limited spaces. Skip it if you want a spacious room to lounge in or traditional four-star hotel service.

• Best for: Solo travelers exploring Collingwood; Couples on short city breaks; Remote workers happy using shared spaces

• Watch out for: Entry-level rooms are only 13 square meters; Shared rather than private cooking facilities in standard rooms; Paid parking requires advance booking

• Location: Excellent for Smith Street dining and shopping; city-bound trams are a short walk away.

• Rooms: Clean, modern and comfortable, but standard rooms are very compact with limited storage.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor feedback.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff receive strong praise across the larger booking sites.

• Amenities: Shared kitchen, courtyard, remote-working spaces, free Wi-Fi and self-service laundry.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and laundry cost extra; parking is limited and should be prebooked.
