#2 of 4 hotels in Carlton by Axel's take. Carlton is #4 of 9 places to stay in Melbourne. The best hotels in Carlton, ranked · Where to stay in Melbourne

Axel's take: 7.6/10

A practical Carlton base, provided you can live with tiny rooms and limited housekeeping. a no-frills 3-star hotel sharing a building with student accommodation, scored for what it is.

Essence Hotel Carlton is a no-frills 3-star sharing a building with student accommodation, best treated as a practical base rather than somewhere to linger. We'd pick it for university visits or sightseeing: Lygon Street, Queen Victoria Market and the city centre are within walking reach. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and good value. A communal kitchen, gym and laundry add useful extras for a simple hotel.

The catch is space and service: rooms are consistently described as tiny, with limited luggage storage. Tripadvisor guests report housekeeping frustrations, and the hotel confirms no routine cleaning on weekends or public holidays. Reception runs from 9am to 9pm, with after-hours support. We'd skip it for a spacious couples' break or if dependable daily servicing matters more than location.

Best for: solo travelers packing light; University of Melbourne visitors; budget-minded city explorers
Watch out for: tiny rooms and limited storage; no routine weekend or public-holiday housekeeping; reception staffed only 9am–9pm
Location: Walkable to universities, Lygon Street and city sights; the free tram zone is a walk away.
Rooms: Compact and simply equipped; recent guests often praise bed comfort but flag luggage space.
Cleanliness: Generally praised on Expedia and Trip.com, though Tripadvisor guests describe missed cleaning and slow follow-up.
Service: Staff friendliness is a recurring strength; problem resolution receives more mixed feedback.
Amenities: Shared kitchen, gym, courtyard barbecue, games lounge, free Wi-Fi and paid guest laundry.
Fees and surprises: Limited paid parking requires advance booking; early check-in and late checkout cost extra, and a card pre-authorisation is required.
