#7 of 7 hotels in Fitzroy & Collingwood by Axel's take. Fitzroy & Collingwood is #2 of 9 places to stay in Melbourne. The best hotels in Fitzroy & Collingwood, ranked · Where to stay in Melbourne

Axel's take: 6.0/10

Handy location and free parking, but housekeeping and room condition need more consistency. a basic budget motel in inner-city Abbotsford, scored for what it is.

City East Motel is a basic budget motel in Abbotsford, worth considering for a short, practical stay rather than a relaxing hotel break. Its strongest arguments are free undercover parking, nearby public transport and rooms with a fridge and microwave. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests praise comfortable beds and convenient access to the city; several also find the staff helpful.

The compromise is more than dated decor. Guest feedback points to uneven cleaning, worn rooms and occasional maintenance problems, while 2026 reviews on both sites mention lingering cigarette smells. Noise from transport and neighbouring rooms can also intrude. We'd consider it for budget-conscious travelers spending most of their time out, but skip it if you're sensitive to smells, a light sleeper or expecting reliably polished housekeeping.

Best for: budget-conscious short stays; drivers wanting free parking; travelers spending their days out
Watch out for: inconsistent cleaning and lingering smoke smells; worn rooms and maintenance issues; transport and neighbouring-room noise
Location: Convenient Abbotsford base near public transport, with easy access to the city and surrounding dining areas.
Rooms: Basic, dated rooms with useful appliances; comfortable beds earn praise, but condition varies.
Cleanliness: Mixed rather than dependable, with recent reports of missed cleaning and lingering odours.
Service: Often described as friendly and helpful, though reception availability and problem-solving are less consistent.
Amenities: Free parking, Wi-Fi and in-room fridge/microwave; confirm breakfast inclusion for your room.
Fees and surprises: Booking.com lists card surcharges; official reception hours are 8am–8pm, so arrange late arrivals.
