Axel's take: 8.7/10

A stylish Manila base with standout staff, but quiet and bathroom privacy aren't guaranteed. A design-led 4-star boutique hotel in Manila, El Poblado, scored for what it is.

The Somos Bold is a design-led 4-star boutique hotel in Manila, with a plant-filled atrium and rooftop restaurant rather than a big-hotel lineup of facilities. It's a strong pick for travelers who want neighborhood cafés, restaurants and genuinely helpful service. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the staff, cleanliness and comfortable rooms; breakfast is generally well liked, though variety gets mixed marks.

The main compromise is that the sociable design can work against rest. Rooftop music and hallway noise recur in reviews, although other guests report peaceful nights. Several rooms have bathroom layouts separated from the sleeping area mainly by a curtain, and dim lighting is another repeated complaint. We'd skip it if you need assured silence or proper bathroom privacy. Confirm the exact room layout before booking, and don't assume the advertised coffee-making facilities are available.

• Best for: Couples comfortable with open bathroom layouts; Café and restaurant explorers; Travelers who enjoy a sociable rooftop

• Watch out for: Rooftop music and hallway noise can carry; Limited bathroom privacy in some rooms; Dim room and bathroom lighting

• Location: Walkable Manila setting near cafés and restaurants, with El Poblado's busier nightlife within reach.

• Rooms: Stylish and generally comfortable; check room size, bathroom separation and advertised coffee-making facilities.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall guest feedback; isolated housekeeping lapses do not dominate the recent picture.

• Service: Warm, helpful front-desk staff are a consistent strength; some guests report slow restaurant service.

• Amenities: Palma Pitón rooftop restaurant and bar, breakfast and Wi-Fi; selected suites have private hot tubs, with some maintenance complaints.

• Fees and surprises: Pets and airport transfers carry extra charges; confirm breakfast inclusion and in-room equipment before booking.
