Axel's take: 7.7/10

Helpful staff make this downtown old-timer worthwhile, but quiet rooms matter. An older mid-range downtown hotel with a rooftop pool, scored for what it is.

Gran Hotel is an older mid-range hotel in central Medellín: a practical pick for sightseeing rather than a polished four-star experience. Booking.com and Hotels.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff and cleanliness, while the location puts Botero Plaza, museums and the metro within walking distance. Breakfast, parking and a rooftop pool add useful extras.

The trade-offs are dated interiors, recurring traffic noise and breakfast that several recent guests find repetitive. Ask for an interior room; guests report successful moves away from noisy street-facing rooms. Also confirm cooling before booking: the official site lists fans, despite some booking sites advertising air-conditioning. We'd choose it for friendly service and downtown convenience, but skip it for contemporary comfort or relaxed nighttime wandering; some guests feel uncomfortable in the surrounding streets after dark.

• Best for: Sightseers prioritizing downtown attractions; Families needing larger room configurations; Travelers who value helpful staff over modern decor

• Watch out for: Traffic noise in street-facing rooms; Dated interiors and repetitive breakfast; Confirm air-conditioning; use caution outside after dark

• Location: Walkable to Botero Plaza and Parque Berrío metro; guest opinions on the surrounding streets are mixed.

• Rooms: Larger family options are available, but dated furnishings, firm beds and exterior noise recur in reviews.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength: Booking.com rates cleanliness 8.6/10, supported by positive Hotels.com feedback.

• Service: The strongest feature, with repeated praise for welcoming reception staff and practical help.

• Amenities: Rooftop outdoor pool, basic cardio area, Wi-Fi and included breakfast; guests sometimes find the pool cold.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is free but subject to availability; airport and area transfers cost extra, and air-conditioning listings conflict.
