Historic character and strong comfort, with spa restrictions worth planning around. a grand historic 4-star hotel in Manchester city centre, scored for what it is.

The Midland is a grand historic 4-star beside St Peter’s Square, and a strong pick for a Manchester weekend with some occasion about it. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise comfortable beds, helpful staff and a generous breakfast; cleanliness also scores well across booking sites. The impressive public rooms give it more character than a standard business hotel, while theatres and Manchester Central are close by.

The main catch is that the Rena Spa pool and thermal suite are not an unrestricted hotel perk: adult access costs extra, requires advance booking and lasts one hour. Some guests also describe service slipping around weddings and busy periods. We'd skip it for an unlimited-pool family break or consistently hushed surroundings. For immediate travel, the hotel flags Metrolink improvement works disrupting several lines from October 19 to November 1, 2026.

• Best for: couples wanting a characterful city break; theatre and concert weekends; Manchester Central conference visitors

• Watch out for: paid, pre-booked one-hour spa access; busy events can affect atmosphere and service; Metrolink disruption October 19–November 1, 2026

• Location: Central and walkable for theatres, restaurants and Manchester Central; St Peter’s Square trams are beside the hotel.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and many spacious rooms earn praise, though room sizes vary.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback across Booking.com and Expedia; no convincing widespread cleanliness problem.

• Service: Usually friendly and helpful, with some reports of slower responses around busy events.

• Amenities: Restaurants, afternoon tea, gym and Rena Spa; pool sessions are restricted, with limited children’s hours.

• Fees and surprises: Budget for adult spa access, off-site parking and the City Visitor Charge; an incidental card hold is required.
