Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong central base with comfortable rooms, but nightlife can interrupt sleep. a modern 4-star chain hotel in central Manchester, scored for what it is.

Clayton is a modern 4-star chain hotel on Portland Street, and a strong pick for a straightforward, comfortable Manchester stay. Its central location makes shops, theatres and transport easy to reach on foot. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, comfortable beds and breakfast, while Booking.com’s strong cleanliness and comfort ratings reinforce the picture. We'd choose it for convenience and dependable comforts rather than distinctive character.

The main reservation is noise: guests on multiple sites report music and street revellers into the early hours, although others describe quiet nights. Request a room away from nearby nightlife, but don't assume a high floor guarantees silence. Occasional housekeeping and bathroom-maintenance lapses also surface. Parking is off-site and charged, and a City Visitor Charge applies. We'd skip it if undisturbed weekend sleep is your first priority.

• Best for: weekend sightseeing; theatre and shopping trips; business travelers arriving by train

• Watch out for: late-night music and street noise in some rooms; occasional housekeeping and maintenance lapses; paid off-site parking and City Visitor Charge

• Location: Walkable Portland Street base for shops, theatres, Canal Street and city-centre transport.

• Rooms: Modern, air-conditioned rooms with comfortable beds; noise exposure varies.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall guest ratings, with occasional missed cleaning and bathroom-detail complaints.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength, though reception experiences vary.

• Amenities: Restaurant, bar, free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour fitness suite; breakfast is widely praised.

• Fees and surprises: No on-site parking; nearby parking costs extra, breakfast depends on your rate, and a City Visitor Charge applies.
