#7 of 9 hotels in Capitol Square & Downtown by Axel's take. Capitol Square & Downtown is #1 of 5 places to stay in Madison, Wisconsin. The best hotels in Capitol Square & Downtown, ranked · Where to stay in Madison, Wisconsin

Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong lakeside splurge, with room choice and extra fees worth watching. an upscale 4-star lakefront hotel near downtown Madison, scored for what it is.

The Edgewater is an upscale 4-star lakefront hotel that earns its appeal through setting and comfort. We'd choose it for a Madison weekend with time to enjoy Lake Mendota, the spa and waterfront dining—not just somewhere to sleep. Expedia and Booking.com guests consistently praise cleanliness, comfortable rooms and helpful staff, while the Capitol and campus are within walking distance.

The trade-offs matter at this level: recent reviews include uneven service and event noise, and resort and parking charges weaken the value. Choose your room carefully: the hotel says standard Edgewater rooms lack lake views, while Lakeview rooms offer only partial views. The pool is a spa relaxation pool, not a conventional swimming pool. We'd skip it if quiet nights, swimming or an extras-light stay are your priorities.

Best for: couples on a lakeside weekend; spa-focused getaways; visitors exploring downtown and campus
Watch out for: resort fee and paid parking; event noise on some nights; lake views depend on room category
Location: Lake Mendota waterfront, within walking distance of the Capitol and UW–Madison.
Rooms: Comfortable upscale rooms; distinguish partial Lakeview from direct Lakeshore views.
Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Expedia and Booking.com guest feedback.
Service: Usually praised, though recent guests on several sites describe occasional lapses.
Amenities: Spa, fitness club, waterfront dining and availability-dependent shuttle; spa relaxation pool.
Fees and surprises: Resort fee and separate parking charges; dining and rooftop changes were proposed in 2026, not confirmed underway.
