#6 of 9 hotels in Capitol Square & Downtown by Axel's take. Capitol Square & Downtown is #1 of 5 places to stay in Madison, Wisconsin. The best hotels in Capitol Square & Downtown, ranked · Where to stay in Madison, Wisconsin

Axel's take: 8.8/10

Historic character and generous extras make this a strong downtown pick—unless you sleep lightly. A small, historic 3-star inn with a bed-and-breakfast feel, scored for what it is.

Hotel Ruby Marie is a 15-room historic inn with a bed-and-breakfast feel, not a conventional full-service hotel. We'd pick it for a Madison weekend with personality: antique-filled rooms, Lake Monona nearby, and downtown sights within walking distance. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and welcoming staff. Included breakfast, parking and a happy-hour drink make it particularly good value.

The main trade-off is sound. This former railroad hotel still sits beside active tracks, and recent guests mention nighttime trains; the downstairs bar and neighboring live-music venues add potential noise, though others report quiet stays. Rooms have individual layouts, and soaking tubs are room-specific, so choose carefully rather than assuming every room offers the same setup. We'd skip it for guaranteed silence or sleek, standardized interiors.

  • Best for: Couples who enjoy historic inns; Downtown weekends without chain-hotel sameness; Travelers who appreciate included parking and breakfast

  • Watch out for: Nighttime train noise; Live music downstairs and nearby; Room layouts and tubs vary

  • Location: Near Lake Monona, with Capitol Square and downtown restaurants within walking distance.

  • Rooms: Fifteen individually configured, antique-furnished rooms; select categories have soaking tubs.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent Tripadvisor and Expedia feedback.

  • Service: Guests repeatedly describe welcoming, helpful staff and straightforward check-in.

  • Amenities: Breakfast, parking, Wi-Fi and happy hour are included; Up North bar hosts live music.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking is complimentary; confirm the exact room features and check-in arrangements before arrival.
