Axel's take: 8.6/10

A characterful Kowloon base with excellent staff, rather than big-hotel luxury. a quirky, upscale 4-star boutique hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, scored for what it is.

The Luxe Manor is a quirky, upscale 4-star boutique hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, and we'd pick it for attentive service and sightseeing convenience rather than grand luxury. Its surrealist decor gives it more personality than a standard business hotel. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and breakfast, while restaurants, shopping and the MTR are an easy walk away.

The main compromises are space and taste: entry-level Superior rooms measure 240 square feet, and the theatrical furnishings won't suit minimalist tastes. There's a 24-hour gym, FINDS restaurant and Dada Bar, but no swimming pool. Breakfast isn't included with every booking, and an incidental deposit is required. It's a strong choice for couples and city explorers; we'd skip it if generous rooms or pool time are central to the trip.

• Best for: couples who like characterful hotels; first-time Hong Kong sightseers; food and shopping-focused city breaks

• Watch out for: compact entry-level rooms; bold, theatrical decor; no swimming pool

• Location: Central Tsim Sha Tsui, surrounded by dining and shopping; roughly five to ten minutes on foot to the MTR.

• Rooms: Distinctive decor and generally comfortable beds; Superior rooms are 240 square feet with rain showers.

• Cleanliness: Recent guests across sites generally praise clean, well-kept rooms; cleanliness ratings are strong.

• Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk staff are the most consistent strength in recent guest feedback.

• Amenities: FINDS restaurant, Dada Bar, free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour gym; no pool.

• Fees and surprises: Incidental deposit required; breakfast, parking and airport transfers can cost extra.
