Axel's take: 7.0/10

A practical location-first choice, but expect tight rooms and visible age. An older, budget-friendly city hotel between Wan Chai and Causeway Bay, scored for what it is.

Charterhouse is an older, budget-friendly city hotel whose strongest asset is its position between Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. We'd consider it for a short stay spent mostly out exploring: shopping, local restaurants and tram stops are close, and the hotel puts Causeway Bay MTR around five to seven minutes away. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the convenience, with helpful staff another recurring positive. A gym and restaurant add useful basics.

The compromise is the accommodation itself. Reviews across both sites describe small, dated rooms, especially family rooms where adjoining beds leave little luggage space. Cleanliness earns plenty of positive mentions, but housekeeping consistency and tired bathrooms draw criticism. The hotel advertises refurbished room categories, so check the exact category rather than relying on general photos. We'd skip it for spacious family stays or reliably polished surroundings.

• Best for: Budget-conscious city explorers; Short shopping and food trips; Travelers prioritizing transport access

• Watch out for: Cramped family-room layouts; Dated rooms and bathrooms; Uneven housekeeping reports

• Location: Walkable to Causeway Bay shopping and MTR, with tram stops and local eateries nearby.

• Rooms: Compact and often dated; the hotel lists 19 m² Superior and Family rooms, versus 27 m² S Signature rooms.

• Cleanliness: Generally acceptable rather than a standout, with positive reports alongside complaints about inconsistent housekeeping.

• Service: Helpful, polite staff receive recurring praise, though experiences are not uniformly positive.

• Amenities: Restaurant, free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour gym; S Lounge access is restricted to S Signature guests.

• Fees and surprises: Official rates carry a 10% service charge and applicable 3% government tax; complimentary disposable plastic amenities are not provided.
