Axel's take: 8.7/10

A stylish downtown base with strong comfort and an excellent concert-going location. a design-forward 4-star in downtown Grand Rapids, scored for what it is.

Canopy is a design-forward 4-star that makes particular sense for a downtown weekend or concert trip. Its mid-century interiors give it more character than a standard business hotel, and Van Andel Arena is about five minutes away on foot. Expedia and Booking.com guests consistently praise cleanliness, comfortable beds and welcoming staff. We'd pick it for those fundamentals as much as for Knoop, the rooftop beer garden.

The trade-offs are mostly practical: parking and breakfast cost extra, and Hilton recommends reserving Knoop because capacity is limited. Some recent guests mention weekend street noise or small housekeeping misses, although neither dominates the feedback. Room-size opinions vary, so check the category rather than assuming generous space. We'd skip it if quiet surroundings and an all-inclusive-feeling stay matter more than walkable nightlife.

• Best for: concertgoers; couples on downtown weekends; travelers exploring restaurants and breweries

• Watch out for: Parking and breakfast cost extra; Possible weekend street noise; Reserve ahead for Knoop

• Location: About five minutes on foot from Van Andel Arena, with restaurants and nightlife nearby.

• Rooms: Distinctive mid-century styling and well-liked beds; room-size feedback varies by category.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across booking sites, despite occasional housekeeping oversights.

• Service: Generally warm and helpful; Tripadvisor contains some sharper complaints about problem handling.

• Amenities: Fitness center, free Wi-Fi, Portico breakfast café and Knoop rooftop beer garden.

• Fees and surprises: Self-parking, valet, breakfast and pets carry charges; Tripadvisor's property description also lists a mandatory destination marketing fee.
