Axel's take: 9.1/10

Prestonfield delivers romantic country-house luxury, provided you prefer antiques to modern minimalism. a theatrical 5-star country-house hotel just outside Edinburgh’s centre, scored for what it is.

Prestonfield House is a 23-room, 5-star country-house hotel set in 20 acres beneath Arthur’s Seat. It’s a strong pick for a romantic Edinburgh stay: richly furnished bedrooms, fireside lounges and peaceful grounds give it character that conventional luxury hotels can lack. Recent Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise attentive staff, comfortable rooms and excellent food, with breakfast and Rhubarb restaurant particular strengths.

The trade-off is practicality. Plan on taxis or a substantial walk into the Old Town, rather than sightseeing from your doorstep. Some recent guests find the interiors too dark and crowded with furniture, with awkward sockets and bathroom layouts; several Tripadvisor diners also describe uneven afternoon-tea service. We’d choose it for atmosphere and personal attention, but skip it if bright, streamlined rooms and immediate city-centre access matter most.

  • Best for: romantic breaks and anniversaries; travelers who love historic interiors; luxury stays with country-house seclusion

  • Watch out for: taxi rides or a substantial walk to the Old Town; dim lighting and furniture-heavy rooms; some uneven afternoon-tea service

  • Location: Peaceful grounds beneath Arthur’s Seat; less convenient for doorstep sightseeing than central luxury hotels.

  • Rooms: Individual, antique-filled bedrooms earn strong comfort reviews, but some guests find lighting and layouts impractical.

  • Cleanliness: Very strong cleanliness ratings on Booking.com and Expedia outweigh isolated housekeeping criticisms.

  • Service: Overnight guests consistently praise warm, attentive staff; afternoon-tea service draws more mixed feedback.

  • Amenities: Rhubarb restaurant, fireside lounges, extensive gardens, free parking and EV charging; dogs stay free.

  • Fees and surprises: The hotel says its rates include the visitor levy; restaurant bills add a discretionary 12.5% service charge.
