Axel's take: 7.8/10

A useful base with good leisure facilities, but tired rooms and occasional event noise. a practical 3-star suburban hotel with a pool and free parking, scored for what it is.

This 3-star hotel on Corstorphine Hill is a good-value choice if you want free parking and a pool rather than Edinburgh’s sights outside your door. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise friendly staff, comfortable beds and generally clean rooms. The indoor pool, sauna, steam room and gym give it more appeal than a basic overnight stop, particularly for families.

The compromise is an out-of-centre location: nearby buses help, but plan on travelling into town rather than walking to the main sights. Rooms and carpets attract recurring comments about looking tired, while creaky floors, corridor noise and weddings or parties can disturb sleep. Ask about scheduled events and request a room away from function spaces. We’d skip it for polished interiors or a sightseeing break built around walking everywhere.

• Best for: families who will use the pool; drivers wanting free parking; value-minded travelers happy to take the bus

• Watch out for: wedding and party noise; dated rooms and creaky floors; travel required for central sightseeing

• Location: Residential Corstorphine Hill setting; a bus route is nearby, but this is not a central sightseeing base.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and family options; recurring reports of worn decor, carpets and creaky floors.

• Cleanliness: Generally well rated, though some recent guests describe housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Friendly reception and restaurant staff are consistent strengths across recent reviews.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, sauna, steam room, gym, restaurant and bar; leisure facilities are a major draw.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is free; breakfast may cost extra. The hotel says displayed rates include Edinburgh’s applicable tourist tax.
