Axel's take: 7.8/10

A characterful Edinburgh base with helpful staff, but uneven rooms temper its four-star promise. a small Victorian 4-star with a guesthouse feel south of central Edinburgh, scored for what it is.

Kildonan Lodge is a small Victorian 4-star that feels more like a traditional guesthouse than a full-service hotel. We'd choose it for period character, free parking and straightforward bus access to central Edinburgh. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, comfortable beds and cosy lounge; overall ratings remain positive, though Booking.com is less enthusiastic.

The catch is inconsistent upkeep. Recent reviews across sites mention tired furnishings, small rooms and occasional cleaning or maintenance shortcomings, alongside plenty of clean, comfortable stays. Confirm your room category and whether you'll be in the main house or separate lodge. There is no lift, and the hotel says its evening restaurant is closed. We'd skip it for polished four-star facilities or step-free access; check breakfast inclusions before booking.

• Best for: drivers exploring Edinburgh by bus; couples who enjoy period interiors; travelers happy with a guesthouse atmosphere

• Watch out for: uneven room condition and size; stairs and no lift; evening restaurant closed

• Location: South of the centre, with frequent buses outside; convenient rather than central.

• Rooms: Individually styled, including four-posters; confirm size, floor and main-house versus lodge placement.

• Cleanliness: Mostly praised, but recent reports of dust, stains and neglected details make consistency a concern.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength, although some guests report inflexible problem handling.

• Amenities: Guest lounge, bar, garden, free Wi-Fi and limited free parking; evening restaurant closed.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusions vary by offer; the official site distinguishes continental breakfast from a cooked upgrade.
